REFORMA DC METRO AREA CHAPTER
The National Building Museum, Washington, D.C.
Minutes from the December 16, 2005 meeting

Attending: Mario Ascencio (George Mason University), Katherine Faulkner (University of Maryland), Elissa Miller (Arlington County Public Library), Elena Tschnerny (D.C. Public Libraries)

I. Welcome and Introduction

We had the opportunity to meet several people at the event. We had the opportunity to speak to Adrian Fenty and Linda Williams (name?).

II. Possible membership meeting, Friday, January 13, 2006, 3 p.m.

  1. In Rm. 3200 of Symons Hall or the special events room of McKeldin Library. The date is flexible, but it should be before mid-winter ALA
  2. Katherine will ask Zaida Diaz to speak for a few minutes about her experiences as a Spanish speaking librarian for the School of Business. She has had the opportunity to do quite a bit of travel and networking. For example, a couple or years ago, she and another librarian (Patricia Herron) hosted the director of Mexico's equivalent of our Library of Congress.

III. Planning the ACRL/Reforma event, Feb. 6, 7, or 8th

  1. Speakers
    1. Featured Speaker: Camilla Alire (15 minutes). She is in town for an ARL committee meeting on the 9th. She would like her talk to be aimed at students, who are about to graduate, who would like to work in academic libraries.
    2. Two possibilities (8 minutes):
      a. Jack Siggings (GW)
      b. Dr. Sydney Pierce (Assoc. Dean of the library school at Catholic)
    3. Johnnie Love, Equity Librarian of the University of Maryland.
    4. Laura Moldanado, George Washington University (8 minutes): She will share her thought on the transition from working at a junior college, to a private school (Catholic University), to an ACRL-recognized university (George Washington University).
  2. Other ideas related to speakers
    1. Elena mentioned Bill Turner. He currently works at DCPL, but he used to work at Catholic.
    2. Another potential contact is Anne Marie Hules, at Catholic.
    3. The web librarian at GW that Laura knows.

  3. Times: Camilla suggested 5:30 - 6:30 to catch students in between afternoon and evening classes.

  4. Final suggestions: When the speaker list is informally finalized, we will send "nice" invitations on letterhead and we will be sure to send thank you notes after the event.

IV. The Patriot Act: Any more senate votes regarding an extension and/or changes to the Patriot Act are going to happen sometime in February 2006. If a chance to support librarianship arises, we will try to help.

V. The Teatro de la Luna Poetry/Theater Event, Wednesday, April 5, 2006 - Elena has asked as many members to be present as possible. She will need a few mintes for this on the agenda of the January meeting.

VI. National Library Legislative Day, May 1st. and 2nd. - This is Reforma DC's annual event. Mario will discuss it more at the January meeting.

VII. Instituto de Cultural de Mexico, May 17 - (Title to be determined. Maybe Publishing the Americas). This is an introductory event for Book Expo of the Americas, aka BEA. Elissa is working with Alejandro Negrín Múñoz. Approximately 40 publishers will be there, mostly from Mexico. Our main goal, as DC Reforma, is to convince people to definitely attend the event. At the January meeting, we will specify who is responsible for submitting the notice to MLA, VLA, DCLA, etc., etc.
