Opening Remarks by Michael McLane, Director of Libraries, and Dr. Martha Hale, Dean or Dr. Sydney Pierce Associate Dean, School of Library and Information Science, The Catholic University of America.

Camilla Alire, President ACRL and Dean of Libraries,
University of New Mexico

Camilla talked about academic librarianship as a career choice for library students, and the importance of membership in professional associations such as the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) and the American Library Association (ALA) and the positive impact these memberships could have in the future careers of these students.

Jack talked about academic librarianship, changes in the future of the profession, and expectations future librarians who may want to work in academic libraries.

Johnnieque Love, Coordinator of Personnel Programs, Personnel & Budget Office, Planning and Administrative Services, University of Maryland Libraries

Johnnieque talked about recruitment into the profession; challenges, real and perceived, for minorities and importance of memberships in other associations such as The Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA), Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA), REFORMA--The National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking etc.

Laura Maldonado, President, REFORMA DC Metro Chapter and Reference & Instruction Librarian The George Washington University

Laura talked about the transition from college, to university, to academic libraries, and the challenges and rewards that come with each position.

There was a 15 minutes Questions & Answer period.

The meeting concluded with a receptions with light refreshments, for which we would like to thank Anne Marie Hules, of the Catholic University Libraries.
