Minutes (from Last Meeting)

“Everette” was spelled incorrectly on the minutes for October..  Otherwise approved.

REFORMA Brochure

Need some information on the “about us” section for the brochure. Focus on the DC Chapter history.  What are the benefits if they become a member of Reforma? What can they bring? What can we do to help our neighbors?  Target the professionals inside the profession who have a piece to change policy. People inside the organization who can do that. Try to get people who work inside the libraries and at the same time, people who support the libraries.  Need a neutral message on the brochure.  Need a message not only targeted at librarians, but at the community.  We need accomplishments. What we’ve done. Where we’re going.

AnaRita is going to suggest 250 copies of the brochure when it’s done to Mario (in-kind donation).

There is a free phone/voicemail option where messages would be forwarded to email. AnaRita will discuss at a later date.

Pre-Reyes party

January 4th party---Betty will not be here. We need to figure out another date.  Other party dates could focus on the following:

  • Meeting to get to know the board.
  • Welcome back to Reforma party.
  • Start the New Year with Reforma!

We need to get together, bring people back.  Pick a date and work towards that. A potluck dinner. Tenative dateà Saturday, 1/26.

Betty’s meeting:

Department of Library and Development Services. Betty’s meeting was a very good meeting. She was surprised there was a lot of interest in knowing about things we’re doing that can benefit them and vice versa. She heard that they were interested in REFORMA assisting them with the collection development area in some of their systems.  They are interested in some training on community needs assessments in the Latino community and cultural awareness. Betty made contacts with people from PG and Frederick counties.   Some concerns brought up: Will they hire Reforma? Get a grant?

As President of the chapter, Betty is going to be on Digital Television on Tuesday, 12/4. She will be on the panel “The Digital Television DTV Transition”. How libraries reach out to the special communities who will be particularly impacted by the DTV transition, such as the elderly, low income, and minority populations. More information can be found on ALA.org/dtv.

Everette’s Thoughts

Partnerships with other organizations are great. But we don’t have enough people. We’re spread too thin. We’d be delighted to partner up with other organizations, but it’d be according to the needs and availability.

Ultimately, we need to bring in people who aren’t librarians, but paraprofessionals…it’s an opportunity to enhance their career by serving in a leadership role in REFORMA.  This gives them a chance.  It’s necessary for people to learn about the wide community of librarians.

Annual Conference—ALA
