REFORMA DC METRO AREA CHAPTER
The home of Laura Moldonado, Washington, D.C.
Minutes from the September 23, 2005 meeting

Attending: Mario Ascensio (George Mason University), Katherine Faulkner (University of Maryland), Elissa Miller (Arlington County Public Library), Elena Tscherny (D.C. Public Library)

I. Welcome and Introductions

II. Discussion of upcoming events

  1. Elissa said the Arlington book club is getting a wonderful response. The next discussion will be about Transportes González e Hija, by Maria Amparo Escandón, on Thursday, October 20, at 7 p.m. at the Arlington Central Library.
  2. Katherine asked about the possibility of having a table at a couple community festivals next year. Mario explained that the chapter has do that in the past. He said ALA is willing to contribute material, such as bookmarks. He also got material from the graduate program at Catholic University and the University of Maryland.
  3. For 2006, the chapter will definitely be participating in National Library Legislative Day (May 1 & 2, 2006) and the Book Expo (May 18 - 21, 2006)

III. Update on the Chapter Web Site

  1. Laura realized that the Angelfire site is not compatible with all browsers. Therefore, she contacted Jose Luis Alvarez and he said the site could be hosted on a server at UCLA. The two options would be to send updates to a staff member there, or to get a password so it can be updated by a chapter member. The decision was made to update the site, then contact Jose Luis Alvarez to proceed with getting a password.
  1. Mario suggested incorporating a blog, so activities and event suggestions could be added more easily.

IV. Discussion Regarding Future Meeting Times

  1. Elissa suggested that we have a couple of meetings that would include both a business meeting and a professional development program. That might have a better chance of drawing in people who have not attended Reforma meetings before.
  1. Elena mentioned that the staff of D.C. public libraries are being offered Spanish lessons. She said the first group of people will be done taking both the beginning and the intermediate class by next spring. One meeting idea would be to have some of the program participants discuss how the classes have helped them. This would be a possible meeting topic for March 2006.
  2. Elissa suggested that a meeting that could be put together quickly would be a "swap and shop" of bi-lingual or Spanish outreach materials. She also said she could probably host such a meeting at the Arlington Central Library.
  3. Elena mentioned that several librarians are taking part in an ALA "March on Washington" (Wed., Sep. 28) about the "John Doe, Librarian" case. If anyone is interested in participating, she can provide more information.
  4. Elena mentioned that the Rotary Club is sponsoring a career fair in D.C.

V. Planning for Meeting Next Month

The title will be Pinata de Recursos: Outreach Materials in Spanish. We will ask for samples on the national and local Reforma lists, as well as anywhere else.
