REFORMA, the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-speaking, announces the competition for the 2007 Mora Award. The Estela and Raúl Mora Award was established by author and poet Pat Mora and her three siblings in honor of their parents and to promote Día de Los Niños/Día de Los Libros (Day of the Children, Day of the Books).  The Mora Award consists of a $1,000 stipend and a plaque donated by the Mora grandchildren.  The Award is presented annually to the most exemplary program celebrating Día de Los Niños/Día de Los Libros.  Schools, libraries, and community organizations who planned and implemented Día de Los Niños/Día de Los Libros programs in 2007 are eligible to submit an application by August 31st, 2007.  

In August 1925, representatives from different countries convened the first "World Conference for the Well-being of Children" in Geneva, Switzerland and passed the "Geneva Declaration Protecting Children."  Countries then designated various dates as Children's Day to celebrate the young.  Since, 1996, REFORMA has been part of the celebration, on April 30 in the United States, by linking books, libraries, and reading, thus, the expanded title, Dia de los Ninos/Dia de los Libros (Day of the Children, Day of the Books).  

Author and poet Pat Mora is strongly committed to establishing Día de Los Niños/Día de Los Libros as an important cultural event that is recognized across the U.S. in schools and libraries.  Previous Mora Award recipients include the Austin Public Library (2000), the El Paso Public Library (2001), the Multnomah County Library (2002),  the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library (2003), the Providence Rhode Island Public Library (2004), REFORMA de Utah (2005), and Kenton County (KY) Public Library (2006).


Application Guidelines for 2007

One of the participating institutions must be a school or library.
  1. Only libraries, schools, or museums may apply. While broad community partnerships are encouraged, essential, and contribute to award winning applications, the sponsor of the Dia program must be a library, school, or museum.

  2. Applicants must indicate a willingness to establish an Internet presence for their Dia celebration, indicate where the Mora Award plaque will be located, and include a statement of support from their library, school, or museum director.  This information may be included on the one paragraph summary page.

  3. REFORMA chapters shall not be eligible to apply. Library systems of current Mora Award Committee members shall not be eligible to apply. No political, religious, or commercial groups shall be eligible to apply.

All activities must have taken place during 2007.

The award will be judged by the following:
  1. Content of the program
  2. Level of involvement of participating agencies; publicity; change in level of activity; and impact statement.

The award stipend will be used to enhance future Día de Los Niños/Día de Los Libros programs.

All events must be literacy focused.

Application

The application should not exceed two pages of typed narrative, exclusive of supporting documents.  Font should not be smaller than 12 point.  One copy of the application, including supporting documents, should be sent to each of the five (5) judges:

Packets must be postmarked by August 31, 2007 and will not be returned.  The winner will be announced by October 15th, 2007.  The formal presentation of the plaque and award check will be made at the 2008 Midwinter Meeting, Philadelphia, PA: Jan. 11-16 , 2008.

Please submit a summary of the following information as a separate first page of your application packet:

  • Name of applicant

  • Name of institution

  • Address

  • Phone number

  • E-mail address

  • Partnering organizations plus contact names and information

  • One paragraph summary of the program

 

All applications must include two pages of typed narrative with the following:

  • Name of the individual filling out the application

  • Name of the institution (school, library, museum)

  • Address

  • Phone

  •   Email address

  • Partnering organizations plus contact names and information

  • Applications may include CD copies of photos of the celebration. 
    PowerPoint presentations will not be accepted.

Narrative Description

Events must be literacy based, with an emphasis on bilingual literacy.  Your narrative should reflect this aspect of the program.  List and describe the events sponsored, including number of persons in attendance at each event as well as demographical information.  How successful were you in reaching your target audience?  (40 points)
 
Specify the names and level of involvement of each of the partnering organizations. (15 points)
 
  Describe the change in level of activity of this year’s program over past years.  If this is the first Día de Los Niños/Día de Los Libros event, please share your perception of this first time effort. (15 points)
 
Include copies of press releases and other publicity, including non-print. If you include photographs, please make sure they depict the literacy component
Bilingual publicity is highly encouraged.  If Spanish-language publicity is not possible, explain in the application.   [Reminders: Please include five copies of each item when assembling your application packets; and items submitted will not be returned].
