June 2012

Loanis Menendez-Cuesta Delray Beach Public Library REFORMA de Florida President, 2011-2

REFORMA de Florida (RdeFL) is on the verge of greatness! The Board of Officers has been working hard behind the scenes to lay a solid foundation to the chapter’s reactivation.  We are focusing on the first objective to implement a strong infrastructure for communication.  We have secured a domain name for the future website of RdeFL, and we are working with Carlos Plaza, South Florida resident, web designer and pioneer Florida REFORMISTA, to develop a website that will serve as a central point for the dissemination and retrieval of library information services available to Latinos in Florida.  There is also a project of collaboration with Ask a Librarian (AaL), Florida’s Collaborative Statewide Reference Service, to include AaL Spanish Email Widgets on participating libraries and on our future website. We hope to unveil the website during our annual meeting at the 2012 FLA Conference in Orlando, Florida.

REFORMA de Florida at RNCIV in Denver, Colorado, Freda Mosquera; Alica K. Long Recording Secretary; Loanis Menendez-Cuesta President of REFORMA de Florida; Sylvia Martinez Mullenix; and Isabel Castro Treasurer and Membership Secretary.

We are also working with Dr. Howard Rodriguez-Mori, Past President of RdeFL and FSU Professor, to develop and implement a survey to gather information about existing Latino library services at each library system and to determine contact information of key personnel in charge of Latino and/or multicultural library services in Florida.

Our second objective is to promote RdeFL’s mission through increased membership.  We need YOU, Floridians! Help us invigorate our Chapter! Contact us with your ideas and ways to become involved.  We are planning to affiliate with The Florida Library Association in 2012.  We are looking for Reformistas who are both FLA and R de FL members.  Please contact Isabel Castro, RdeFL Treasurer and Membership Secretary, aticastro437@aol.com, to support our membership and affiliation efforts. You may also go to http://www.reforma.org and affiliate with R de FL online.

Last but not least, RdeFL was represented at the RNCIV in Denver, Colorado by several Floridians who began the work of chapter reactivation.  At the conference, we were able to network with veteran Reformistas and gain renewed energy.  We would like to thank the PLA for awarding the 2012 PLA Fellowship to Attend RNCIV to our President, Loanis Menendez-Cuesta.  For more information, please visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ReformaFlorida

The future is bright for REFORMA de Florida! The time is now! Florida Reformistas are here!
