Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
1. Stays abreast of library of archive issues and trends.
2. Assists in development of budget and grant applications, may direct or monitor work unit expenditures.
3. Provides input into the development of policies and procedures for library. Coordinates system-wide library
activities, such as collection development, acquisitions, cataloging, processing, mending, withdrawals, recycling of
books, and circulation support.
4. Advises library staff on library procedures and issues, including selection, collection development, cataloging and
classification, processing, intellectual freedom, and/or preservation.
5. Provides outreach services to the public. Directs and develops public relations for work unit activities. Conducts
meetings, training, and public programs. Interprets and explains policies to public and staff. Represents the City of
Austin and Austin Public Library to the public. Coordinates customer service hotline.
6. Selects library materials and develops collections for system, branch, or special collections. Provides original
cataloging in all formats. Compiles bibliographies.
7. Plans, develops, and manages work-unit fund raising activities and administer spending of donations.
8. Oversees maintenance, security, and physical attractiveness of facility, grounds, and equipment.
9. Coordinates with other libraries and organizations concerning resource sharing and coordination of services.
10. Oversees cash handling and reporting. .Prepares reports, collects and monitors statistics

Develops long and short-term plans.
Assists in development of budget and grant applications, may direct or monitor work unit expenditures.

Represents the City of Austin and Austin Public Library to the public.
Maintains library youth materials at a location and develops collections for system, branch, or special collections. Compiles bibliographies.
Manages a region of the Youth Services division.
Provides and oversees youth services programs.
Coordinates with other libraries and organizations concerning resource sharing and coordination of services.
Prepares reports, collects and monitors statistics.

Responsibilities – Supervision and/or Leadership Exercised:
Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling and recommendation for dismissal.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
Knowledge of library procedures, systems, and techniques.
Knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws.

Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited university, plus four (4) years as a professional librarian, two (2) years of which as a lead or supervisor.
Licenses or Certifications:
May require a valid operator’s license and the use of a personal vehicle.

Physical Requirements:
Must be able to stoop, bend, walk, and reach heights of up to six (6) feet.
Must be able to lift or pull book bags and equipment up to fifty (50) pounds.
Must be able to push loaded book truck up to three hundred (300) pounds.
Must have manual dexterity to operate computer keyboard.
