Faculty Director of Libraries Information Technology
The University of Colorado Boulder Libraries invites applications from experienced, visionary, and creative librarians to provide leadership and expertise in information technology (IT) services as Faculty Director of Libraries Information Technology. The successful candidate will have a strong theoretical and practical understanding of the role of libraries in higher education and how technology enhances and supports our educational mission. The Faculty Director of Libraries Information Technology (LIT) reports to the Senior Associate Dean of Libraries and serves as a member of the Libraries Management Team which works collaboratively to articulate the vision and strategic direction of the Libraries. As a member of the faculty, this position supervises a department of two FTE faculty, 11.5 FTE professional and technical staff, and student assistants. This position plays a key role in developing strategies to support next generation library services and resources in conjunction with Libraries and campus colleagues. The faculty director assumes multifaceted roles and manages a department that provides webmaster functions, web development, coordination and support of digital user experience testing, digitization services, audio-visual media production, and desktop and server support. Providing technical support for Libraries’ faculty research goals is also a component of the director’s responsibilities. In addition, in the campus IT community, the faculty director maintains a leadership role that advocates for the Libraries’ needs in the development of the campus IT infrastructure.
The department provides IT services and support for the University Libraries. LIT cultivates relationships, partners, and collaborates with all Libraries units, the campus Office of Information Technology (OIT), Research Computing, University Information Systems, the Colorado Alliance, and an array of third-party vendors. The Faculty Director of LIT represents the Libraries in broad campus conversations about IT. The successful candidate must be dedicated to customer service and prepared to engage with all of the Libraries’ activities to understand the range of information technology needs. This department is responsible for mission-critical IT infrastructure and related services such as IT strategy; support of Libraries IT operations including approximately 500 work stations and 23 servers; managing instructional technology and spaces, library applications, web services and user experience; maintaining network interfaces, connections with the campus, and digital initiatives. This department also ensures that critical services supporting instruction and research missions are provided 24/7 to the campus as well as to citizens of Colorado.
This is a renewable, non-tenure-track faculty position that will be appointed at the Senior Instructor level. Successful candidates will be expected to engage in research and professional service activities.
● Master’s degree from an ALA accredited program in library and information science (MLIS) or equivalent
● Three or more years of progressively responsible library information technology experience
● Ability to develop, oversee implementation, and manage innovative technologies to enhance library services
● Significant supervisory experience that promotes teamwork among librarians, libraries IT professionals, and the campus community
● Awareness of the current developments in IT systems, standards, best practices, and trends related to academic libraries
● Proven ability to analyze and architect library technology systems in support of cross-unit library functions
● Excellent time and project management skills in concert with the ability to lead effectively
● Demonstrated ability to communicate technical issues and solutions effectively to a diverse set of stakeholders
● Demonstrated commitment to digital user experience, including web presence, digital collections, and related services
● Aptitude for solving problems and facilitating change
● Demonstrated ability to advocate for and cultivate an environment of diversity, respect, and inclusion
● Proven commitment to providing outstanding customer service
● Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
● Degree in information systems, computer science, or related discipline
● Five or more years of experience in a research library information technology department
● Experienced in managing relationships with third-party vendors
● Record of successfully obtaining and managing grant-funded technology initiatives
● Ability to collaborate with campus stakeholders and cultivate creative partnerships, e.g., campus museums and campus faculty
● Demonstrated ability to manage expectations and priorities diplomatically among various stakeholders
● Demonstrated experience with evaluation of build versus buy information technology solutions
● Demonstrated record of scholarship and professional service
Appointment and Salary: The successful candidate will be appointed as a full-time (12 month), non-tenure track faculty member at the Senior Instructor level. The salary is competitive, and benefits include 22 working days vacation; 10 paid holidays; liberal sick leave; University group health care plan; group life insurance; TIAA/CREF, Fidelity, or Vanguard retirement/annuity; and support for scholarly/professional activities.
