The Pennsylvania State University Libraries invite applicants for the position of Head Librarian of the Nesbitt Library at Penn State Wilkes-Barre. This position will be filled either as a tenure-line or fixed-term faculty librarian position, depending upon the interests and qualifications of the successful candidate.

The Head Librarian is a member of the University Libraries faculty and is responsible for overall library administration and services at the Nesbitt library, including supervision of librarians and staff, collection development, reference and instruction services, and oversight of the library budget. The Head Librarian works closely with campus faculty and staff in developing an innovative program of instruction and services that contributes to student retention and improved learning outcomes in resident and online courses. The Head Librarian is expected to support the evolving mission of the campus which includes more regional, inter-campus programs, and a greater variety of online and hybrid courses. The Head Librarian should possess demonstrated leadership qualities; should be student-centered, innovative, and collaborative; should believe in open communication; and be interested in working with the faculty and staff of the Wilkes-Barre campus, the University Libraries, and the Penn State campus community within the region. As a faculty member, the successful candidate is also expected to be active in scholarship, service, and outreach.

Penn State Wilkes-Barre is located 13 miles west of the city of Wilkes-Barre on the grounds of a park-like estate.   There are approximately 800 students and the campus offers 6 baccalaureate degrees in addition to the first 2 years of over 160 Penn State undergraduate degrees.

QUALIFICATIONS: Required: Masters in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program (or equivalent) and leadership experience in academic libraries. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills and demonstrate a participatory management style. A strong commitment to service and supporting diversity on campus is expected. Preferred: A deep familiarity with academic library trends and emerging technologies, demonstrated experience in managing budgets and strategic planning, along with the desire to lead the library in meeting its strategic goals.

Rank and salary are dependent upon qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include liberal vacation, excellent insurance and health care coverage, state or TIAA/CREF retirement options, and educational privileges. In addition, faculty in the University Libraries are afforded funds for professional development travel annually. Faculty may be asked to travel as official representatives of the Libraries to certain events and those trips are reimbursed at full cost within limits established by the University.
