Position Available: Position available immediately. This is a 100%-time, twelve-month appointment Academic Professional position with an initial 2 year appointment and may become permanent at a later date.

This is a full-time Visiting Academic Professional position in the University Library. The position provides Operational and Reference support for the Illinois History and Lincoln Collections. The position reports to the Curator of the Illinois History and Lincoln Collections.

Duties and Responsibilities: This limited-term academic professional position assists with planning and implementing policies and procedures for services related to the Illinois History and Lincoln Collections and specifically coordinates appraisal, processing, digitization, access and outreach for the IHLC manuscripts, archival, and monographic collections. The incumbent assumes a leading role in the provision of services for these materials and will use specialized knowledge of records, standards, and techniques to assist faculty, administrators, students, and members of the public in locating, interpreting, and making research use of primary and secondary sources. He or she will develop and implement plans to accession, arrange, process, describe and provide access to archival materials in analog and digital forms, in consultation with the Curator and with functional experts in other Library units, such as University Archives, Preservation and Conservation, and Digital Content Creation. The position assists in the supervision of graduate and undergraduate student workers when employed in the unit.

Specific responsibilities will vary from week to week but may include:
·        Arranging and describing archives, manuscript collections, electronic records, and other library materials using best professional practices;
·        Developing/maintaining content in archival databases, finding aids and web pages, and specialized reference guides;
·        Preparing and implementing digitization plans, in collaboration with other Library staff;
·        Developing grant applications to garner additional resources to process and enhance access to IHLC collections;
·        Coordinating collection development activities for IHLC, under the direction of the curator;
·        Conducting reference interviews, providing mediated access to archival materials and secondary sources, providing remote reference services; and interpreting access policies;
·        Contributing to the development of and writing documentation for processing policies and procedures;
·        Supervising graduate and undergraduate students; and
·        Research opportunities

The Library currently employs approximately 90 faculty and 300 academic professionals, staff, and graduate assistants. The Library's Illinois History and Lincoln Collections contain printed and manuscript sources which facilitate research into every period and aspect of the history of Illinois and into the life and times of Abraham Lincoln. The unit holds nearly 40,000 volumes, approximately 2,500 cubic feet of manuscripts, and a large number of maps, broadsides, prints and photographs, artifacts, and ephemera. The collections are used by faculty, graduate students, and undergrads on campus. They are also used by researchers who live in Illinois and nationwide. The unit currently consists of a Curator, although undergraduate and graduate students as well as intern or practicum students may be employed at various times.

Qualifications: Required: Graduate coursework in American history and/or library science, Bachelor's degree in the humanities, social sciences, or related field; prior professional or pre-professional experience working in archives or a manuscript repository; demonstrated knowledge of, and experience with, archival techniques and practices; ability to manage and complete a diverse range of projects in a timely and accurate fashion; demonstrated ability to communicate clearly in writing and in person; ability to exercise independent judgment and participate in group/team endeavors.
Preferred: ALA accredited Master’s of Library Science or equivalent; graduate course work in archives or special collections management; experience providing reference services for archival materials; one or more years of demonstrated experience arranging, describing, and managing archives or manuscript collections; demonstrated experience with digitization, working knowledge of preservation and/or conservation practices, and supervisory experience.

Salary and Rank: Salary commensurate with credentials and experience.

Terms of Appointment: Twelve-month appointment; 24 work days' vacation per year; 11 paid holidays; 12 days annual sick leave (cumulative up to a maximum of 240 days) plus an additional 13 days (non-cumulative) per year if necessary; health insurance, requiring a small co-payment, is provided to employees (coverage for dependents may be purchased); participation in the State Universities Retirement System is required upon appointment (8% of member's salary is withheld and is tax exempt until retirement); newly hired university employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security, and are subject to its deduction.
