24-Month Appointment
The Bancroft Library
Assistant Librarian
$47,722 per annum
This is a full-time temporary appointment for 24 months. The expected start date is December 1, 2014.
The University of California, Berkeley, is seeking a Processing Archivist whose primary responsibility will be to arrange and describe the records of the Save the Redwoods League housed in over 400 cartons. This is a full-time temporary appointment for two years. The successful candidate will have experience with manuscript collection processing of organizational and/or personal papers, demonstrated understanding of archival description and materials, work experience with project management, familiarity with archival standards (EAD, METS, MARC, MODS), and strong communication skills.
The Environment
The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally renowned research and teaching facility at the nation's premier public university. A highly diverse and intellectually rich environment, Berkeley serves a campus community of 25,500 undergraduate students, 10,300 graduate students, and 1,500 faculty. The Library comprises 20 campus libraries - including the Doe/Moffitt Libraries, the Bancroft Library, the C. V. Starr East Asian Library and subject specialty libraries. With a collection of more than 11 million volumes and a collections budget of over $15 million, the Library offers extensive collections in all formats and robust services to connect users with those collections and build their related research skills.
The Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley, is one of the largest and most heavily used libraries of manuscripts, rare books, and special collections in the United States. As the primary center of special collections within the library system at Berkeley, Bancroft supports major research and reference activities and plays a leading role in the development of research collections. Bancroft holdings include over 500,000 volumes, 55,000 linear feet of manuscripts, 8 million photographs and other pictorial materials, 72,000 microforms, 23,000 maps, and over 12.5 terabytes of digital collections. Responsibilities
The Processing Archivist has full responsibility for managing the transfer of the collection to an off-campus worksite in Richmond where the project will be completed. He/she will review and evaluate the internal organization and make recommendations to the organization in keeping with the collection provenance. The archivist will supervise processing support staff consisting of graduate interns and undergraduate student assistants. The Archivist establishes workflow and work schedules, trains unit staff, and edits/reviews unit staff work-product, especially the creation of the finding aid. The Archivist works closely with curators in the assessment of the collection and in selection of collection materials. He/she works with the Bancroft Digital Collections Unit to develop the EAD-encoded finding aid. The Project Archivist will report to the Principal Manuscripts Archivist.
UC Berkeley librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning and governance, and work effectively in a shared decision-making environment. Librarian advancement is partially based upon professional contributions beyond the primary assignment; the successful candidate will show evidence or promise of such contributions to the Library, campus, UC System, and profession.
Qualifications
Minimum Basic Qualification at time of application:
•     MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution, or equivalent degree in which coursework has focused on the intellectual control and organization of archival collections.
Additional Required Qualifications:
•     Evidence of effective project planning, management, and completion.
•     Evidence of strong interpersonal and communication skills, initiative and flexibility.
•     Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and ensure regular workflows.
•     Ability to meet a high standard of quality of work independently and expeditiously.
•     Ability to coordinate, schedule, and handle heavy workloads.
•     Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
•     Ability to safely move carts and book/flatbed trucks loaded up to 100 pounds; lift and bend with boxes or volumes weighing up to 40 pounds; carry large/awkward map carriers; climb and reach on step stools and rolling ladders; handle dollies and book/flatbed trucks.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
•     Knowledge of appraisal of complex organizational papers.
•     Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with processing, arrangement and description of personal papers and/or records of organizations records through completed finding aids.
•     Demonstrated ability to apply DACS, MARC, and EAD encoding through completed catalog records and/or published finding aids.
•     Undergraduate degree in history or political science (especially US or Western US history).
•     Experience using a collection management system.
