Visiting Principal Cataloger and Visiting Assistant Professor
Rare Book & Manuscript Library

Position Available: As soon as possible after closing date of search.

This is a full-time Visiting Faculty position in the University Library reporting to the Director of the Rare Book & Manuscript Library. The position is funded through a three-year grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) for the project Cataloging Cavagna: Italian Imprints from the 16th through the 19th Centuries. The collection of more than 20,000 rare imprints was acquired in 1921 by the University of Illinois from the family of Count Antonio Cavagna Sangiuliani di Gualdana (1843-1913), a recognized authority on the local history of Northern Italy. The Visiting Principal Cataloger provides high-quality original, enhanced, and copy cataloging of rare books and rare materials in other formats, written in a variety of languages (mostly Italian and Latin, but also French, German, and various Italian dialects) which cover multiple subject areas, including Italian history, literature, theater, arts, law, economics and religion. The Visiting Principal Cataloger creates or enhances bibliographic records in the OCLC database, following national and local bibliographic standards, exporting those records into the Library’s Voyager database. The Visiting Principal Cataloger is responsible for the hiring, training, and supervision of the other project catalogers (2.5 FTE), produces all necessary policy and procedural documentation and progress reports, and serves as a resource person for answering questions and helping to resolve difficult cataloging problems. In addition, the Visiting Principal Cataloger is responsible for ensuring the quality of the bibliographic records produced and for managing the project workflow. The Visiting Principal Cataloger keeps track of all statistical and budgetary information. The position is available immediately and ends 31 December 2017.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
·        Creates detailed and accurate original bibliographic records for rare books and rare material in other formats as needed
·        Performs high-level enhanced and copy cataloging, for rare books and rare material in other formats as needed
·        Hires, trains, and supervises RBML Cataloging Project staff members
·        Produces policy and procedural documentation
·        Serves as a resource person to answer cataloging questions and to resolve difficult cataloging problems as they arise
·        Compiles and maintains statistics and budget information

Position Requirements and Qualifications
Required:
·        Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program
·        A minimum of two years of cataloging experience in a rare book and manuscript library environment
·        Sound working knowledge of AACR2/RDA and DCRM (B) cataloging rules
·        Sound working knowledge of MARC format
·        Working experience with OCLC bibliographic and authority databases
·        Working experience with other cataloging tools, including DCRM (S) and Library of Congress Subject Headings, as needed
·        Knowledge of Latin or non-English European language(s)
·        Demonstrated ability to perform detailed work with close attention and accuracy
·        Demonstrated ability to balance quality and quantity
·        Excellent communication and organizational skills

Preferred:
·        Proficiency in basic computer skills
·        Working experience cataloging with an integrated library system, preferably Voyager
·        Knowledge of Italian
·        Knowledge of Romance language(s) other than Italian
·        Supervisory and training experience

The Rare Book & Manuscript Library of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is one of the largest repositories for rare books and manuscripts in the United States. The collections-nearly half a million volumes and three kilometers of manuscript material-are strong in the broad areas of literature, history, art, theology, philosophy, technology, and the natural sciences. Particular strengths lie in early printing (1200 incunabula) and imprints from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, with English literature, works by Shakespeare, various important editions of the Bible, and renaissance school books standing out as distinctive and deep collections. Also noteworthy are collections in the history of science and technology and the history of economics. The Library is renowned for its collection of emblem books and for its extensive holdings of works by and about John Milton. A special emphasis of the Library's collections is drama, from neo-Latin plays to Italian baroque drama, to Elizabethan and Jacobean playbooks, to twentieth-century set and costume design. Significant resources for northern Italian history can be found in the Cavagna Collection, which includes material from the twelfth to the twentieth century. The Spanish Golden Age collection includes more than 1,200 volumes dating from 1472 to 1700 and comprises not only Spanish literature, but also religion, law, politics, medicine, and astronomy. Finally, modern literary archival material housed in The Rare Book & Manuscript Library include the papers of Gwendolyn Brooks, H.G. Wells, Carl Sandburg, and W.S. Merwin; letters of Marcel Proust; and manuscript collections associated with such figures as Anthony Trollope, John Ruskin, Grant Richards, William Allingham, Richard Bentley, Benjamin Disraeli, Lewis Carroll, and John Richardson, among others.

Salary and Rank: Salary commensurate with credentials and experience.

Terms of Appointment: Twelve-month appointment; 24 annual vacation days; 11 annual paid holidays; 12 annual sick-leave days (cumulative), plus an additional 13 sick-leave days (non-cumulative) available, if needed, each year; health insurance requiring a small co-payment is provided to employee (with the option to purchase coverage for spouse and dependents); required participation in State Universities Retirement System (SURS) (8% of annual salary is withheld and is refundable upon termination), with several options for participation in additional retirement plans; newly-hired employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security and are subject to its deduction.
