Archives & Special Collections Faculty

The Department of Library, Information and Media Studies (LIMS) at Chicago State University (CSU) invites applications for a tenure-track professor of assistant or associate professor ranking. The successful candidate will coordinate a new MLIS concentration in archives and records management, and teach courses primarily in this area. She/he will also teach at least one core course in the MLIS curriculum, and help to create an interdisciplinary urban focused LIS program. The candidate is also expected to assist in fostering teaching, research and service relationships with other programs in the university and Chicago cultural institutions.

Required: Ph.D. in Library and Information Studies or related discipline with specializations in archives, records management, historical collections and/or cultural resource management. Priority will be given to applicants with MLIS from an ALA accredited program, and professional library and/or archival work experience. Also preferred is a strong research and teaching record appropriate to rank, including teaching experience in at least one of the following areas in the MLIS curriculum: cataloguing and classification/metadata, research methods, digital information management, and information services in urban communities.

Preferred: ARMA or ACA certification and familiarity with multi-type institutional (library, archives, museum and government agency) networks, and potential for contributions to professional service, research and publication. Experience in supervising internship and fieldwork programs, and the ability to work closely with Chicago-area practitioners to secure internship and fieldwork positions. Demonstrated ability in design and delivery of courses in a variety of formats, including distance learning modes will be valued. Experience in grant writing and project management would be an advantage.

Compensation: This is a 9-month faculty appointment with a standard Illinois state benefit package and competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Opportunities for added compensation exist for summer school teaching, sponsored research, and consulting. Anticipated beginning: fall 2012, or earlier, if feasible.
Profile: Chicago State University is a fully accredited (NCA) urban-mission and minority serving institution of ca. 7000 students of whom a quarter are in graduate studies. It offers 26 Masters programs and 2 professional doctorates. The College of Education which is accredited by NCATE is the second largest academic unit in the university. LIMS is an expanding program with an MLIS program in school librarianship, and new concentrations in urban informatics, telecommunications management and archives and special collections. It is in pre-candidacy for ALA accreditation and its faculty development is expected to contribute to this effort.
