Additional Information
Purpose
Serve as the Head of Special Collections and the Senior Archivist for the Benson Latin American Collection, providing senior leadership for the development, processing, and preservation of the Benson rare book and manuscript collections.
Essential Functions
Oversee and manage special collections. Oversee maintenance of Benson special collections facilities, security, and preservation and stewardship of rare print materials, archival materials, objects and ephemera. Manage staff in processing archival collections, including arrangement, description (MARC and EAD cataloging), and preservation. Process archival collections including arranging, describing and preserving archives, create EAD finding aids, and MARC bibliographic for the collections. Maintain appropriate documentation on acquisition, accession, appraisal and rights management. Work with the LLILAS Benson facilities manager and UTL to manage special collections supplies and equipment needs. As part of the Benson collection development team, develops both physical and digital collection resources in support of teaching, learning, and scholarship on campus. Work directly with donors, faculty, and staff on development, appraisal, and acquisition of manuscript, rare book, and artifact collections. Work with UTL, LLILAS Benson, and other development staff on grant project proposals and fundraising activities. Provide leadership for public service in special collections, supervising the rare books librarian in management of the rare books and manuscripts reading room. Provide reference and circulation service during reading room hours. Provide reference services for Benson special collections to faculty, students and other researchers in person and via email, telephone, and mail. Lead instruction sessions and tours in support of teaching and learning at the university, and for special visitors and guests of the Benson Collection, LLILAS, and the UT Libraries. Provide outreach and scholarly presentations to the public, professional organizations and conferences, and student groups. Manage professional and student staff engaged in preservation and conservation of rare materials. Manage submission of materials for digitization by UTL scanning and media digitization departments. Coordinate with UTL conservator for preservation freezing of archives and other pest management and conservation needs. Supervise professional and student staff for the special collections unit. Conduct annual performance appraisals of special collections staff.

Required qualifications
Masters degree in Library Information Sciences from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent degree. At least 3 years professional experience in an archive or manuscript repository with processing archival collections, Encoded Archival Description, and related metadata cataloging practice. Familiarity with both analog and digital preservation. Knowledge of and experience with digitization standards and processes. Coursework or training in archival management and theory and knowledge of archival preservation best practices. Professional working proficiency in Spanish and/or Portuguese. Demonstrated knowledge of Latin America. Available for international travel. Demonstrated exemplary work. Excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate with diverse populations. Ability to organize short- and long-term priorities/projects and work with multiple deadlines. Experience dealing with confidential and sensitive information. Ability to interact professionally with faculty, staff, students, researchers, donors and the public. Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team member. Flexible and willing to take on new responsibilities. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
More than three years professional experience working in an archive or manuscript repository with processing archival collections. Certification by the Academy of Certified Archivists. Experience working in an academic research library, scholarly special collection, or large research organization. Experience working with international populations. Experience providing library public service. Experience with acquisitions. Experience with and commitment to digital scholarship initiatives.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
