ANNOUNCEMENT OF PROFESSIONAL VACANCY


POSITION:        Head, Art Library, Joseph C. Sloane Art Library

AVAILABLE:      March 1, 2016

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks an experienced, innovative, and user-oriented librarian to serve as Department Head for the Joseph C. Sloane Art Library, a premier art research library in the southeast region. The successful candidate will oversee the daily operations of the Art Library comprised of over 100,000 volumes on site, significant collections off-site (shared with Triangle Research Library Network partner libraries), and growing and unique collections of artists’ books, self-published photobooks, and artists’ files.

The Art Librarian serves as the primary library liaison to the Art Department and Ackland Art Museum. The librarian supports the teaching, research, and creative practice of scholars and artists by developing core research collections for art; providing specialized research and instructional services; and developing exhibitions and outreach programs that showcase the library’s special collections. The successful candidate will also have exciting opportunities to continue collaborative activities with library, art department, and art museum colleagues to develop makerspace and digital humanities services and programming.

The Art Librarian directly supervises one FTE Art Library Assistant and two graduate student assistants, and indirectly supervises ten or more undergraduate student assistants. This position reports to The Director of Research and Instructional Services. As a member of the Research and Instructional Services Department, the Art Librarian contributes to library-wide initiatives through participation in strategic planning activities and interaction with other library departments.


REQUIRED Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

·        Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program with a strong academic background in the visual arts, art history, or a closely-related field.
·        Minimum five years of relevant professional experience.
·        Demonstrated success supervising library staff and managing library public services.
·        Experience in developing art library collections and providing instruction services.
·        Working knowledge of art information sources.
·        Knowledge of and experience in application of technology to library services, particularly with ARTstor or CONTENTdm.
·        Excellent oral and written communication skills.


PREFERRED Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

·        Advanced degree in art, art history, or related degree.
·        Successful experience in managing grants, fund-raising, donor cultivation, and grant-writing.
·        Reading or bibliographic knowledge of a Western European language.

Salary and Benefits
This is twelve-month academic librarian appointment. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Standard state benefits of annual leave, sick leave, and State or optional retirement plan.
