University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign


Position Available: This position is available July, 2012. This is a 100%-time, twelve-month appointment Academic Professional position.

Duties and Responsibilities: The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks an innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented professional for the position of Director of Library Information Technology Production Services. The University Library maintains a robust infrastructure for digital collections and services that supports the needs of nearly 100 million virtual visitors each year. Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Information Technology Planning and Policy, the successful candidate will oversee the staff, technology support, networking, infrastructure, and applications support for Library enterprise IT systems, including Infrastructure Management and Support (IMS), Workstation and Network Support (WNS), and Help Desk (HD) services.

The Director of Library Information Technology Production Services will:

Direct IT production operations and services across the University Library, working with a team of managers and technology professionals in other Library units to achieve a cohesive set of services, through regular meetings and other formal and informal means of communication;
Directs and prioritize Library IT customer services efforts, working closely with Library groups, units, and committees.
Works closely with IT managers and staff on the implementation of new technology infrastructure, software tools, and database applications designed to ensure and enhance Library-wide systems and technology services;
Collaborates on the selection, deployment, and support of production library systems and services with all sectors of the Library, University academic and administrative computing organizations, and the CARLI statewide library consortium. Fosters and sustains operational and strategic relationships with peer institutions, consortia, and information system vendors;
Develop and direct a clear and effective communication program for Library IT Production Services. Ensures that information flows freely among the IT units to enable effective staff collaboration in support of the Library's technology-based services and operations.   Enables timely two-way communication between Library IT and the Library about current technology-based services and planning for the future. Facilitates communication between Library IT Production Services, Library staff, and users about the ongoing development and support of technology services and systems upon which the Library staff and the campus community rely daily;
Manage a critical services support plan across the Library IT Production Services, including 24 x 7 on-call response for Library IT production services;
Identify needs and challenges and initiate solutions in the delivery of production IT services in a high-volume public service setting; develops business process improvements that contribute to more effective technology services Library-wide, and directs groups and individuals in their implementation, assessment, and improvement.
Advocate for University and campus technology policy compliance Library-wide, and works with Library units and Library committees on the development of a culture of IT policy best practices, in particular around security and privacy;
Manage the allocation of Library IT funds, working closely with Library IT Managers, the AUL for IT Policy and Planning, and Library stakeholders. Tracks budget expenditures across Library IT areas to ensure support for current programs and to assist in identifying funds to support new and emerging needs. Directs the annual budget planning activity with the AUL/ITPP and the Library IT managers;
Direct the formal change management and change control process for Library IT’s production operations, working in collaboration with the IT Production Services managers.
Promote and support the mentoring and ongoing professional development of IT professional staff, as well as the productive use of Investigation time by all IT professionals.
Work with the Coordinator of Library Assessment and IT Managers to evaluate and improve production Library IT services as part of the Library’s strategic goals supporting access, education, and research.
Work with the Coordinator for Staff Development and Training to identify solutions for technology training needs for Library staff and faculty.

Library Information Technology supports more than 20 departmental libraries located across campus, as well as an array of central public, technical, and administrative service units. The Library also encompasses a variety of virtual service points and "embedded librarian" programs. It is a dynamic, multi-vendor computing environment that maintains more than 60 Linux, Windows, and Solaris servers, two VMware ESX clusters, and nearly 300 terabytes of storage to provide access to hundreds of applications, databases, and collections for the University Library and its affiliates. The Library supports a mix of nearly 1,200 workstations, primarily Windows (Windows 7) and a small number of Apple computers that are connected to the campus Active Directory. Qualifications:

Required: A Bachelor’s degree; experience in a library or academic computing services setting; demonstrated experience implementing user-focused or customer service technology services in a high-volume academic setting; project management experience in substantial computing or information system implementations or migrations; experience supervising and mentoring technical professionals; ability to facilitate effective prioritization and collaboration on projects with multiple customer groups, including domain experts, academic users at various skill levels, and IT professionals; demonstrated ability to lead and manage professional staff, to make decisions in a collaborative team environment, and successfully direct and support multiple production operations; excellent oral and written communication skills; familiarity with data storage requirements.

Preferred: Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Library and Information Science, or a related field; library work experience or substantial knowledge of library applications and practice; experience installing and administering multi-user production systems using Windows 2003/2008 Server and Linux, including web servers (Apache or IIS) and database servers; fluency with SQL Server 2005/2008, Oracle, and/ or MySQL; familiarity with Active Directory, GPO, LDAP, SAMBA, Kerberos, Shibboleth, DHCP, PowerShell; experience with VMWare ESX hosted servers and Compellent (or equivalent) SAN systems; understanding of administering systems with SCCM, SMS, BigFix, Altiris, or other endpoint management tools; awareness of TSM, Symantec Backup Exec, or Symantec NetBackup ; proficiency with supporting Macintosh OSX servers and workstations; client-side programming awareness in Windows or Linux/UNIX environments, particularly using Perl, PHP, and ASP.NET;.

Salary and Rank: Salary commensurate with credentials and experience.

Terms of Appointment: Twelve-month appointment; 24 annual vacation days; 11 annual paid holidays; 12 annual sick-leave days (cumulative), plus an additional 13 sick-leave days (non-cumulative) available, if needed, each year; health insurance requiring a small co-payment is provided to employee (with the option to purchase coverage for spouse and dependents); required participation in State Universities Retirement System (SURS) (8% of annual salary is withheld and is refundable upon termination), with several options for participation in additional retirement plans; newly-hired employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security and are subject to its deduction.
