Position Available: As soon as possible. This is a 100%-time, twelve-month, tenure-system appointment. Rank will be appropriate to the qualifications of the candidate selected, at a level of either Associate Professor or Professor. The five-year administrative appointment as Head of the unit is renewable after successful administrative review of program leadership.

Duties and Responsibilities: The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library <www.library.illinois.edu> seeks an innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented leader for the position of Undergraduate Librarian and Head of Undergraduate Library. The Undergraduate Library (UGL) http://www.library.illinois.edu/ugl/   has been a nexus for innovation in Library services for almost 50 years, and has provided leadership for Library-wide exploration of new approaches to instruction, access, library spaces, and outreach services, as well as for services delivered through social networking tools, immersive environments, and mobile computing platforms.

Position Description: Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for User Services, the Head of the Undergraduate Library is responsible for providing leadership for and management of the Undergraduate Library, developing and leading the unit leadership team, and establishing and maintaining collegial and collaborative relationships with other units in the Library, the campus and University, and the profession. The Head works closely with the University Librarian, Associate University Librarians and other unit heads to develop Library-wide undergraduate services, collections, and initiatives and to build strategic relationships with campus units and programs that support undergraduate student success and the faculty and staff who teach, advise, and mentor them. In addition, the Head oversees the University Laboratory High School Library, working with the University Laboratory High School Librarian to discuss planning and needs for the collections, services, and facilities. The Head of the Undergraduate Library tracks trends, best practices, and initiatives in undergraduate education and undergraduate library services and uses that knowledge to inform Library services and collections programs in the context of the Library’s Framework for Strategic Action < http://go.illinois.edu/framework>.

The successful candidate will:
·        Lead planning and action to develop and deliver quality and innovative services, collections, and programs for undergraduate students aligned with campus and Library strategic priorities;
·        Oversee an ongoing, iterative, and student-centered process of program development, assessment, and facilities management in the Undergraduate Library;
·        Foster undergraduate student learning, success, and wellness; stay informed of campus undergraduate initiatives; and build effective and strategic networks of support and advocacy across campus and beyond;
·        Oversee collection development in the Undergraduate Library, in collaboration with individuals within the UGL and among the other Illinois’ campus libraries;
·        Build and maintain collegial and collaborative relationships with campus colleagues responsible for undergraduate student programs, such as the Writers Workshop, Division of General Studies, University Housing, the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics, academic programs, and student affairs programs;
·        Contribute to Library-wide service initiatives such as the Main/UGL Reference Hub and work closely with other Library units, committees, and working groups to develop undergraduate services, collections, and initiatives across the Library;
·        Direct the work of a team of creative and innovative faculty and staff; including the selection, training, and evaluation of staff; management of workloads and job assignments; supporting ongoing professional development; coaching individual performance; maintaining robust internal and external communications; and fostering a positive and collaborative work culture;
·        Promote and market Library services and collections related to undergraduate programs and student success;
·        Oversee the materials budget and the development and management of Undergraduate Library collections;
·        Prepare regular and on-demand reports, including annual reports, budget requests, and assessment and evaluation of services, spaces, and collections;
·        Contribute to the national and international reputation of the University Library through professional research, service, and collaboration with appropriate colleagues and organizations.

Qualifications: Required:
·        ALA-accredited Master’s degree or equivalent;
·        Minimum of five years of professional experience in an academic or research library environment;
·        Minimum of three years of experience providing information and research services and instruction in an academic or research library environment;
·        Collection development experience;
·        Experience in shaping, implementing, and assessing innovative library services and/or spaces;
·        Supervisory experience;
·        Budgetary management experience;
·        Demonstrated leadership, communication, and team-building skills;
·        Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse community of library staff and users;
·        Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and busy service environment;
·        Demonstrated ability to contribute effectively to collaborative projects within and outside the library;
·        Evidence of research, publication, and professional service commensurate with appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.

Preferred :
·        Experience conducting assessment of undergraduate student information needs, information literacy, technology skills, and/or library use patterns;
·        Supervisory experience in a research library environment;
·        Demonstrated success establishing collaborative service programs with campus partners outside the library;
·        Demonstrated knowledge of trends in higher education, especially those related to undergraduate education;
·        An understanding of applications of emerging technologies in libraries.

Salary and Rank: Salary commensurate with credentials and experience, and will include an administrative component for the five-year renewable appointment as unit head. Rank at the level of Associate or Full Professor of Library Administration, depending on the qualifications of the candidate selected. Librarians have faculty rank, and must demonstrate excellence in librarianship, research, and university/professional/community service in order to meet university standards for tenure and promotion.
