ROLE of the
POSITION

Reporting to the Head of Discovery Services, the Cataloging and Metadata Strategies Librarian will work to enable timely, comprehensive and effective discovery of all Libraries’ collections.

The Libraries’ strategic plan sets direction for optimizing the growth, dissemination and discovery of the Libraries’ diverse, multi-format and unique collections in several areas including regional collections and UNLV research outputs. The Cataloging and Metadata Strategies Librarian’s specific portfolio will include MARC-based cataloging to support the discovery of these collections. Cataloging will be completed to local, national and international standards with original cataloging records contributed to OCLC WorldCat. To advance discovery initiatives and ensure metadata interoperability for these materials, the incumbent will also provide metadata oversight for the Libraries’ institutional repository, DigitalScholarship@UNLV.

The Cataloging and Metadata Strategies Librarian will work with library catalogers to lead the strategic adoption of new standards and vocabularies for the library catalog and the remediation of metadata to meet current standards and vocabularies. To provide for consistent discovery of the Libraries’ collections, the incumbent will also collaborate with library catalogers and other library departments with metadata responsibilities to address common authority control needs, especially in preparation for broader adoption of linked data.

The Cataloging and Metadata Strategies Librarian may also serve as the lead cataloger for additional specific portions of the Libraries’ collections to be assigned based on the candidate’s interests and skill set within the context of the priorities of the Libraries and the Libraries’ strategic plan.

As a faculty member, the incumbent will be expected to engage in scholarly activities and to provide service to the university, community, and profession in accordance with UNLV and University Libraries standards for promotion and tenure.
