The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for an entry-level Health Sciences Librarian, to collaborate in building a state-of-the art Health Sciences Library for its School of Medicine (UNLV SOM), a new public medical school in Southern Nevada.

Located in one of the most exciting cities in the nation, UNLV is a comprehensive research university of approximately 29,000 students and 3,000 faculty and staff dedicated to teaching, research, and service. Founded in 1957, UNLV is a growing urban research institution. Major areas of strategic focus for the campus are: attaining a Carnegie Foundation designation as Tier One "Research University/Very High" (RU/VH), entering the top 100 American research universities; and developing a public medical school in Southern Nevada that will boost the regional economy and provide the community with more access to quality health care.
UNLV SOM earned preliminary accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and has just enrolled its charter class of 60 students which is expected to eventually grow to 180 students. The university currently has a wide array of health sciences programs, including a School of Allied Health Sciences, School of Community Health Sciences, School of Nursing, and School of Dental Medicine. UNLV SOM is creating a world-class center of excellence and innovation for medical education, patient care, and research that prepares Nevada’s physicians with the most advanced knowledge, treatments, and technologies while serving the health care needs of our diverse urban community. UNLV SOM is building clinical, education, and research programs in cancer, cardiology, mental health and addiction, neuroscience, and orthopedics. The SOM’s innovative, problem-based curriculum centers on the importance of relationships in health care and will foster long-term connections between students and faculty, health care professionals, patients, families, and the community. Students will learn how to provide compassionate care in teams of health professionals including physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, dentists, physical therapists, social workers, occupational therapists, and others in the pursuit of the best patient outcomes and satisfaction at the lowest cost.

Health sciences faculty, staff, and students are currently located on the main campus and are supported by the main Lied Library. University Libraries’ new Health Sciences Library will be part of UNLV SOM’s first academic building, and designed to support the School of Medicine and all other health sciences faculty, staff, and students located on the evolving health sciences campus. Incorporating cutting edge technology while remaining high-touch as a partner in student learning and in support of research, the Health Sciences Library is being designed to support team-based learning and to serve as a resource for practitioners within the Southern Nevada health sciences community. Library faculty are partners in student learning, embedded to support evidence-based, interdisciplinary discovery of the latest research information. Physical learning spaces will incorporate multimedia, data, and GIS capability for research and the creation of new knowledge. Authoritative collections are being built and delivered, whenever possible, in electronic formats, enabling access on multiple mobile device platforms. The Libraries’ institutional repository will capture and disseminate scholarly papers, research, and conference proceedings to showcase the intellectual output of its health sciences faculty and scholars for the world to discover and use.


University Libraries seeks innovative, collaborative, user-focused applicants for a new, entry-level Health Sciences Librarian position. Reporting to the Founding Director, Health Sciences Library, and joining three new Health Sciences Librarian faculty, a Multimedia and Emerging Technologies Coordinator, and a Library Technician II, applicants for this position should be familiar with health sciences library resources and services, and knowledgeable about information literacy and evidence-based medicine principles and practice. Successful applicants should have interest in using the latest technologies to build a new health sciences library from the ground up and be passionate about service and delivering dynamic, mostly digital, collections seamlessly and reliably, to the health sciences community. We offer a supportive, team-oriented library environment where discussion of innovative ideas and experimentation with new ways of planning and implementing the health sciences library of the future are a part of our culture.

The successful candidate will work closely with the School of Medicine to develop curriculum-integrated instructional sessions, provide research support and consultations, collaborate with teaching faculty on assignment and course content, and maintain effective collections in the medical and health sciences disciplines in order to meet the teaching and research needs of faculty, residents, fellows, and students. The incumbent is expected to contribute to the planning, development, provision, and assessment of a cohesive program of library services, collections, and strategic information literacy initiatives. This will include supporting biomedical and health informatics, data services, information literacy & evidence-based medicine, open access, research data management, and scholarly communication initiatives within the library and on campus.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to work in a complex, changing environment with a positive, flexible, and innovative attitude, and will have a proven capacity to work effectively and collegially on teams with staff at all levels, as well as with faculty, residents, fellows, and students.

As a tenure-track library faculty member, the incumbent will also be expected to engage in scholarly activities, and provide service to the university, the community, and the profession in accordance with UNLV and University Libraries standards for promotion and tenure.

QUALIFICATIONS








Required:
?     ALA-accredited master's degree in library or information studies
?     Familiarity with health sciences library resources and services
?     Knowledge of information literacy & evidence-based medicine principles and practice
?     Familiarity with information technologies and their application to research and teaching
?     Excellent oral and written communication skills
?     Ability to prioritize workload assignments

Preferred:
?     Undergraduate or graduate degree in the health or life sciences
?     Strong health sciences database searching skills
?     Experience working within an undergraduate or graduate, medical education environment, or in clinical or hospital settings
?     Teaching experience, including the design of course materials and delivery of presentations
?     Knowledge of trends in biomedical informatics, data services, and scholarly communication
?     Experience in library outreach services
SALARY RANGE

This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position at Rank II or III (equivalent to an Assistant or Associate Professor). Salary range starts at $65,000 – salary is negotiable and commensurate with experience and qualifications. In addition, University Libraries is committed to and helps fund professional development opportunities. Salaries are competitive with those at similarly situated institutions and dependent upon labor market. This position is contingent upon funding.
