Associate University Librarian for Public Services
The University of Virginia Library seeks an experienced and creative leader for the position of Associate University Librarian for Public Services to lead the Library Services and Spaces group, a department of over 50 employees who staff 9 libraries. The UVA Library has a strong reputation, ranking 23rd in the latest ARL investment index and 18th in a recent Princeton Review “Best College Libraries” ranking based on student feedback. The AUL for Public Services will build on this reputation to articulate a vision and strategic direction to advance the Library's research and instruction efforts; develop, sustain, and promote innovative services; manage welcoming and useful library spaces; and expand outreach to the campus community in support of teaching, learning, artistic activity, and scholarship.
The Associate University Librarian for Public Services will be a member of the Library’s leadership team and will report directly to the University Librarian and Dean of Libraries. The AUL will have responsibility for the overall administration and coordination of the Library's public-facing services and spaces and will provide leadership for the subject liaison program, the teaching and learning program, and specialized user services. The AUL will oversee the development of programming for new and evolving teaching and research tools and methods, including those for digital scholarship, multimedia production and use, and data management and analysis. This position will also guide our information services, including reference, reserves and circulation, and will ensure that our libraries provide a consistent, pleasant, and productive experience to all researchers and Library visitors.
The AUL for Public Services will work closely with colleagues to assess the impact of Library services, drive responsible resource allocation, demonstrate the value of the Library to the University, and develop strategic alliances with the University’s academic leadership and other external partners in pursuit of shared goals. The AUL will make evidence-based decisions to steward university resources in a responsible and forward-looking way, and work with peers to ensure that collections meet the needs of the academic community. Enhancing library collaboration in the research process and establishing the Library as an effective partner in school and institutional initiatives are important goals of the position.
This is an exciting time for the Library, as the University of Virginia prepares to mark its Bicentennial, a celebration in which the Library is deeply embedded. Concurrently, Alderman Library, built in 1938, is poised to undergo a major renovation project and this position will have a role in influencing the new design for the building, as well as responsibility for the provision and improvement of services during the renovation process.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated success in progressively-responsible positions of leadership, an excellent reputation for staff leadership and development, and a record of innovative use of scholarly information resources. A Master’s degree in Library science or a related field is required, and a second graduate degree is preferred.
