POSITION:        Health Sciences Librarian for Collections and Instruction
AVAILABLE:      December 2017

The Health Sciences Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a collaborative, proactive, and service-oriented person to take on the new role of Health Sciences Librarian for Collections and Instruction. This person provides leadership for collection decisions made in the context of changing user needs, emerging formats, and access models, and develops and provides effective and innovative client?centered education on Library collection resources in client settings, in the library, and virtually.   

The Health Sciences Librarian for Collections and Instruction is part of a team of librarians, support staff, and library partners working to achieve the library’s mission to manage information and knowledge to advance health and health care. This person maintains relationships and represents the Library in University-wide activities and in other venues, such as consortial and professional association meetings, and participates in other Library activities in support of the Health Sciences Library’s mission and to serve the university community as needed.

This position reports to the Assistant Director for Information Access and Discovery and participates in the leadership of the Information Access and Discovery department. This position also works closely with subject and school liaison librarians, the HSL Special Collections Librarian, the HSL Information Resources Coordinating Group, and the University Libraries’ collection development teams.

Principal responsibilities:

Collections Development and Maintenance:

·        Direct and coordinate library-wide collection development and collection services, working with other individuals and groups, to ensure relevancy and currency of collections.
·        Identify new resources that address the teaching, research, and patient care mission wherever UNC-CH faculty have a presence.
·        Monitor ongoing development of resources and do comparative analyses of competing products to help inform decision to do a trial or purchase.
·        Test and select mobile applications to extend effective access to and use of collection resources.
·        Recommend collection purchases and information products that support global health research, teaching, and service.
·        Lead assessment efforts to evaluate desirability and usability of current subscription resources in light of library and university needs, and to support renewals, alternative access options, and cancellation.
·        Evaluate effectiveness and suitability of permanent collections using a variety of assessment methods.
·        Maintain knowledge of current trends in scholarly communication, publishing business models, and emerging technology related to collection development.

Collections-Related Promotion & Instruction:

·        Develop and maintain client-centered relationships with faculty, students, and library staff to ensure the Library’s collections meet and anticipate information needs, collect stories on how collections resources affect their work, and effectively communicate collections resource decisions.
·        Publicize new resources and collections-related initiatives via the HSL blog, website, social media, and other methods; regularly assess the effectiveness of communication methods and channels used.
·        Develop tutorials and other materials to deliver online instruction on Library collection resources.
·        Collaborate with other Library staff to develop instruction modules that can be adapted and customized for various audiences and education opportunities.
·        Participate in delivery of in-person instruction in client settings and in the library.
·        Create customized subject guides and portals to make content available to users online.
·        Promote the Library’s role in acquiring and providing access to locally developed content.

Professional Development

Pursues professional development, professional service activities, and publication as guided by the standards of the library’s Committee on Appointments and Promotions. Participates in self-directed learning and education programs to build subject knowledge and stay current with emerging trends. Conducts research or quality improvement projects to understand better the nature and impact of high quality information services.

REQUIRED Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

·        ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science
·        Minimum of two years of professional experience in library collection development in an academic health sciences library, hospital library, or other health-related library setting.
·        Experience preparing and delivering instruction on use of electronic resources.
·        Ability to demonstrate understanding of current trends in scholarly communication, publishing business models, and emerging technology related to collection development.
·        Willingness to embrace change related to developing collections and client-centered services.
·        Demonstrated ability to work with a broad range of constituencies.
·        Excellent oral and written communication skills.
·        Ability to foster a collaborative and cooperative work environment.
·        Demonstrated commitment to providing outstanding customer service.

PREFERRED Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

·        Subject expertise in one or more health sciences areas.
·        Demonstrated interest and experience in finding resources accessible in developing countries.
·        Experience preparing tutorials for delivering instruction online and globally.
·        Experience with collections budget planning including budget projections and needs assessment.
·        Broad knowledge of library materials in a variety of formats and experience in working with vendors.
·        Experience working in the publishing industry.
·        Participation in organizations addressing issues of managing collections and scholarly resources.

Salary and Benefits
This is a twelve-month academic librarian appointment; salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
