INSTRUCTION AND REFERENCE LIBRARIAN
(FULL-TIME, TEMPORARY)

The University of California, Irvine Libraries seeks a proactive, collaborative, energetic, and service-minded librarian to serve in a one year temporary appointment with a possibility of renewal for a second year. The successful Instruction and Reference Librarian will work with faculty, librarians, staff, and students to support initiatives to promote effective learning and information discovery both in-person and online.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Instruction and Reference Librarian will be a member of the Department of Education and Outreach (E&O), reporting to the Head of E&O. The core responsibilities of the position are as follows:

·        Teach information literacy workshops for lower division general education and writing courses, including Writing 39c and Humanities Core.
·        Provide research consultations to students in lower division courses, as well as consultations in other subject areas, as appropriate.
·        Assist with staffing of reference services in-person and online.
·        Participate in the University Libraries’ “Personal Librarian” program for first-year students.
·        Assist in the development and maintenance of web-based resource guides (LibGuides).
·        Support library-wide outreach initiatives.
·        Assist in the development of instructional and outreach materials, which may include videos, multimedia objects, or other online tools.
·        Contribute to other projects or services as needed.

Qualifications

Required
           
·        Graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution or an equivalent combination of an advanced degree and library experience.
·        Experience teaching in a library or in higher education.
·        Ability to provide excellent reference service in all formats for students and faculty in an academic library.
·        Familiarity with the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy, as well as other issues and trends in higher education learning.
·        Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
·        Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively and to promote teamwork, diversity, equality, and inclusiveness within UCI Libraries and the campus.
·        Commitment to user-centered library services.

Preferred

·        Experience with information literacy instruction and assessment.
·        Familiarity with the design, development, and assessment of online learning objects.
·        Engagement with the scholarship of teaching and learning, including pedagogical practices and instructional design.
·        Ability to provide support for data literacy to undergraduate students.

The Department of Education and Outreach

The Education and Outreach Department leads the UCI Libraries’ outreach and instruction activities and programs, which emphasize information literacy, research skills, scholarly communication, and critical thinking. The Department coordinates, integrates, and assesses library instruction and outreach activities, including subject-based, graduate, and professional school instruction. The Department operates in a collaborative, team-based environment and works closely with members of the Libraries’ Reference and Collection Development Departments in order to fulfill its mission. The Department consists of 5 librarians (including the Department Head) and 1 library assistant.
The UCI Libraries

The Libraries consist of the Langson Library, the Ayala Science Library, the Library Gateway Study Center, and the Grunigen Medical Library. These buildings contain over 3,300 public seats for study and research and provide nearly 525 public access computers. The library collection consists of over 3.8 million volumes, nearly 150,000 journals and serial titles, and an aggressively expanding electronic resources collection. University of California, Irvine
The University of California, Irvine, is nestled in over 1,500 acres of coastal foothills, five miles from the Pacific Ocean, between San Diego and Los Angeles. Founded in 1965, UCI has more than 31,500 undergraduate and graduate students and about 1,600 faculty and staff. Librarians at the University of California Irvine are academic appointees and receive potential career status at the time of their initial appointment. Librarians periodically receive administrative and peer review for merit increases based on the following criteria: 1) professional competence and quality of service within the Library; 2) professional activity outside the Library; 3) university and public service; and 4) research and other creative activity.
Salary & Benefits : This is a temporary full-time appointment for one year from the date of hire with a possibility of renewal for one additional year. Appointment will be at the Assistant Librarian rank with an anticipated salary of $49,165 - $53,257.
Librarians are entitled to two days per month of annual leave, thirteen paid holidays, and one day per month sick leave. The University offers a variety of group health, life, and disability insurance plans. Benefits are equal to approximately 40% of salary.
