University Librarian
Georgetown University
Washington, D.C.

Georgetown University invites applications and nominations for the next University Librarian (UL). The University is seeking a talented, dynamic and innovative leader to articulate a vision and chart a course for the Georgetown Library that addresses important challenges in the areas of collections, technology, space management, and organizational development. The UL will come to Georgetown at a time of great opportunity, joining a highly respected academic institution with significant aspirations for the coming decade.

Established in 1789, Georgetown is the nation's oldest Catholic and Jesuit university, today providing students with a world-class learning experience focused on educating the whole person through exposure to different faiths, cultures and beliefs. Ranked 20th in the 2018 US News and World Report national university rankings, Georgetown's undergraduate student body is among the most selective in the country. Its graduate programs include arts and sciences, nursing and heath studies, business, law and medicine, and schools for professional development. Georgetown's colleges and schools include: Georgetown College, The Graduate School, The School of Medicine, The Law Center, The School of Nursing and Health Studies, The Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, The Robert Emmett McDonough School of Business, The School for Continuing Studies, and The McCourt School of Public Policy. Georgetown currently enrolls approximately 18,525 students (7,453 undergraduate students and 7,295 graduate and professional students) from all 50 states and more than 130 countries.

Reporting to the Provost, the UL is the chief administrative officer for Georgetown University Library, which includes the main campus library, Lauinger Library, and eleven other facilities. The UL also provides oversight or direction for the Blommer Science Library, the School of Continuing Studies Downtown Campus Library, the historic Riggs Memorial Library and the Woodstock Theological Library, which holds the collections of the former Woodstock Theological Seminary. The Georgetown University Library holds 3.5 million volumes and extensive collections of manuscripts and rare books, audio visual materials, microforms, graphics, and government documents. Annual expenditures of the Library are approximately $15 million, with staff and librarians working in the Library numbering 100.

The new UL will also lead the library at a crucial time at Georgetown, as the University engages in a process of understanding its historical role in the institution of slavery and works toward establishing a new Institute for Racial Justice, a university-level institute that will further Georgetown's research and outreach initiatives. It is expected that the Library will be a strong partner of the new Institute and will help in the establishment of the Institute and Georgetown as a destination for scholars and researchers in all its related fields.

The UL will also be actively involved in fundraising efforts in Georgetown's upcoming capital campaign. While not yet definite, one of the targets of the next capital campaign will surely be funding for a significant renovation of Lauinger Library to increase and modernize its interior space, meaning that this UL will have the opportunity to build the Georgetown Library of the 21st century. The new UL will embrace fundraising, playing a key leadership role in a team-based approach, working with library development staff.

The successful candidate will bring to the role significant experience and achievement in leading a research library. Georgetown seeks an individual who exhibits strong and inspiring leadership, the ability to articulate a vision and provide strategic direction for its libraries in the rapidly changing information environment, and to provide leadership at the national and regional levels on research library issues. This individual will be committed to building and sustaining a diverse workforce, and will possess effective budget management skills, knowledge of assessment tools and use of data to evaluate programs and services, and a strong understanding of the issues of scholarly communication and open access and the other challenges facing the 21st century research library. An MLS from an ALA-accredited program or other appropriate degree is required; an additional master's degree or PhD is desirable.

Inquiries, nominations, and applications (including cover letter and CV or resume) should be submitted electronically to:
