QUESTIONS
Description
Under general supervision, performs professional library work involving reference assistance, reader's advisory, public contact and program coordination. The current vacancy is a full-time position that works 50% of the time at the Avenue Library and 50% of the time at the Saticoy Library in the Ventura Region of the Library System.

The ideal candidate will have a strong customer service orientation and the ability to develop and deliver excellent library services for families with children in a welcoming service environment; be able to communicate well with children of any age; understand principles and practices of early literacy; be able to model respect, empathy, tact, discretion, and diplomacy; and work effectively as an integral member of the Library's team.

Some positions may be eligible for educational incentive. This incentive may be 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% for incumbents in eligible positions based on completion of an Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree that is not required by the classification.

Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentive pay depending upon operational needs and certification skills.

Examples Of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Answers reference questions and reader's advisory questions; assists or instructs in the use of the library resources.
Trains non-professional personnel to ensure efficient operation of the library. Collaborates with schools and other community groups; conducts school class visits.
Interprets and communicates library policies and programs to staff, patrons and community groups.
Develops and implements youth programs and services.
Recommends additions to collection and services appropriate to the needs of the community.
Works with automated systems; performs searches of databases.
Performs related duties as assigned.

Librarians are represented by Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and is eligible for overtime compensation.

NOTE: This classification is within a bargaining unit that is subject to an agency shop arrangement which mandates all Regular employees either join Local 721 of SEIU and pay dues as a member OR either pay a service fee to Local 721 or direct that an amount equivalent to the service fee be distributed to a qualified charitable organization.

Typical Qualifications
These are entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

EDUCATION, TRAINING and EXPERIENCE
Successful candidates will have a background of experience/education in library services and operations which would normally be acquired by completion of a Master's degree in Library Science or by comprehensive professional experience in library services.

Special Requirements
Must possess at the time of appointment, and maintain thereafter, a valid California driver license.

DESIRED:
One (1) year experience overseeing day-to-day branch library operations.
Experience in supervision of Library personnel is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of: library methods, techniques and procedures. Library automation, audiovisual materials and methods; basic reference methods; principles and techniques used in bibliographic research.

Supplemental Information
Work is primarily performed in a public library environment. Will be required to work weekends and evenings.

SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE – qualifying: All applicants are required to complete and submit the questionnaire for this exam AT THE TIME OF FILING. The supplemental questionnaire may be used throughout the exam process to assist in determining each applicant's qualifications and acceptability for the position. Failure to complete and submit the questionnaire may result in the application being removed from consideration.

APPLICATION EVALUATION – qualifying: All applications will be reviewed to determine whether or not the stated requirements are met. Those individuals meeting the stated requirements will be invited to continue to the next step in the screening and selection process.

NOTE: If there are a high number of qualified applicants, a comparative screening will be conducted to determine which of the applicants will be selected for invitation to the oral examination. Applications will be evaluated and ranked according to criteria that most closely meets the needs of the department, so it is essential that applicants provide as much detail as possible and answer all parts of the application and supplemental questions.

ORAL EXAMINATION – 100%: A job-related oral examination will be conducted to evaluate and compare participating candidates' knowledge, skills, and abilities in relation to those factors which job analysis has determined to be essential for successful performance of the job. Candidates must earn a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list.

If there are three (3) or fewer qualified applicants, an oral examination will not be conducted. Instead, a score of seventy percent (70%) will be assigned to each application, and each applicant will be placed on the eligible list.

ELIGIBLE LIST: The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill this position and similar positions only within Library Services. Candidates successfully completing the examination process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year. There is currently one (1) vacancy.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: A thorough background investigation, which may include inquiry into past employment, education, credit, criminal background information, and driving record may be required for this position.
