Job Description

Cline Library at Northern Arizona University (NAU) seeks an experienced, collaborative, and forward-thinking leader for the position of Head, Teaching, Learning and Research Services. Reporting to the Dean and University Librarian and as a member of the library leadership team, the Head will lead the library’s design, delivery, and assessment of instruction, services, and programming that contribute to student success and research excellence. The Head will demonstrate a strong commitment to the strategic directions of the library and the university while working with librarians, faculty, and university partners to shape the next generation of library services for a diverse group of users in Flagstaff and at a distance.

NAU is a comprehensive, doctoral institution with a strong commitment to undergraduate education and student success. It is home to nearly 150 combined undergraduate and graduate degree programs delivered through seven colleges. Over the past decade, NAU has seen tremendous growth in its student population, in online and distance education, and in its research agenda; the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education classifies NAU as a Research University with High Research Activity. The University now serves more than 30,000 students across more than 30 statewide locations and online, and retains its deep commitment to academic excellence and student success.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

·        Provide leadership for the Teaching, Learning, and Research Services Department, responsible for engaging students, faculty, and researchers and serving as a conduit for communication between colleges and the library. TLRS Librarians explore and maintain strong departmental and college partnerships that facilitate student learning and research productivity.

Strengthen the unit’s role as a valued partner in a rapidly changing academic and research environment.   Build on unit strengths while balancing daily operations and big-picture projects. Lead unit planning, projects, and other activities in the changing context of organizational and institutional priorities. Use evidence-based decision-making to improve, expand or discontinue services and resources. Integrate effective strategies for performance management and resource allocation. Forge effective partnerships with internal and external partners. Actively represent Cline Library on the Academic Chairs Council and other relevant university committees and internal or external project teams.

·        Use effective communication and management skills in supervising TLRS librarians (9 FTE; one is located at the Phoenix Biomedical Campus). Effectively facilitate and participate in the review process, from guiding the formation of staff goals that align with library and university goals to providing constructive feedback in annual evaluations. Relate staff development to library and university priorities and coach staff positively to encourage professional growth. Foster a work environment where civility, communication, and teamwork are valued.

·        Promote the continued development and growth of Cline Library’s research support services, including the OpenKnowledge@NAU institutional repository, data management services, and open educational resources. Ensure the tracking of metrics related to research support services. With the Research Programs Librarian, develop TLRS outreach on relevant topics such as scholarly communication and open access.

·        Monitor and improve the unit’s impact on student learning and success. Oversee the design and delivery of TLRS support that makes a direct and positive impact on students’ successful achievement of course- and program-level student learning outcomes. Collaborate with library and university colleagues to address challenges in a changing information environment and increase awareness of resources and services, including integrating library resources and services into the learning management system. As a TLRS member, participate in unit work and activities, including teaching as necessary.

·        With library and faculty colleagues develop library partnerships and departmental programs that leverage the library’s technology-rich learning spaces to promote experiential learning and innovation. Participate in the planning and development of new learning spaces and the implementation of emerging technologies.

·        Participate in library and university events and activities related to student recruitment and engagement.

·        Collaborate with Head, User Services and Experience, to schedule, deliver, evaluate and improve a spectrum of in-person and virtual reference services. As a TLRS member, participate in unit work and activities, including email and chat services as necessary.
·        Collaborate with Head, Content Access and Delivery Services to acquire, evaluate, and manage print and electronic collections and to further the adoption of open educational resources.

·        Serve as a member of the library leadership team. Collaborate and communicate effectively with leadership team colleagues to provide outstanding programs and services in support of library goals. Contribute effectively to library-wide planning and resource allocation in a shared decision-making environment. Serve in rotation as an on-call, after-hours Building Monitor.

·        Document and share examples that demonstrate the alignment of the unit’s activities with university and curricular directions. Contribute to relevant marketing and development efforts. Oversee the accurate tracking and reporting of TLRS statistics used for annual reporting and other purposes. Coordinate TLRS contributions to library reports developed for academic program and accreditation self-study documents.

·        Identify and pursue professional development and service opportunities that reflect a commitment to learning, innovation, and excellence in higher education and libraries.
Share and integrate what is learned in ways that benefit users, colleagues, and the profession. Share and integrate what is contributed in ways that benefit users, the library, the university, or communities (local, national or international).


Minimum Qualifications

·        ALA-accredited graduate degree from a library and information science program or an advanced degree in a related field.

·        Three or more years of post-degree academic library experience in teaching, learning, and/or research services as related to the stated position responsibilities.

·        Supervisory experience.


Preferred Qualifications

·        Demonstrated familiarity with the academic library's role in research, teaching and learning in higher education, as well as knowledge of current issues, trends, and emerging opportunities in academic libraries and higher education, to include scholarly communication, open access and open education resource initiatives.
·        Three or more years of successful leadership in progressively responsible positions supervising full-time staff, including hiring, goal setting, performance management, and formal evaluation at the individual and unit levels.

·        Demonstrated experience planning, implementing, managing, evaluating and improving the daily and ongoing operations of a program or service.

·        Experience managing unit and individual outcomes and productivity, including scheduling, managing workloads, and balancing unit and individual needs and expectations.

·        Record of providing teaching, learning, and/or research-focused outreach services to faculty, academic program leaders, and other campus partners.

·        Demonstrated ability to translate ideas into actionable programs that further library and university goals.

·        Project management experience, including the ability to solve problems and respond to changing needs while aligning resources and activities with the goals and directions of a larger organization.

·        Demonstrated experience collecting, analyzing, and communicating data and other assessment information for decision-making, continuous improvement and effective allocation and use of resources.

·        Demonstrated experience working collaboratively in an inclusive and diverse learning environment.

·        Demonstrated ability to facilitate effective, diplomatic communication among diverse stakeholders in person and remotely.

·        Demonstrated success in leading and fostering strategic innovation in a rapidly changing and complex academic and/or research environment.


General Information

Northern Arizona University is a 30,368-student institution with its main campus in Flagstaff, a four-season community of about 70,000 at the base of the majestic San Francisco Peaks. Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check.

Finally, each year the Northern Arizona University Police Department releases an annual security report. The report is a result of the federal law known as the Clery Act and contains policy statements that address the school’s policies, procedures and programs concerning safety and security including policies for responding to emergency situations and sexual offenses. The report contains three years of data for Clery reportable crime statistics for the campus along with the most current year’s Fire Safety Report, which includes policy statements and fire statistics for Flagstaff on-campus student housing.

Salary

$75,000 to $83,000 annually, depending on experience.

This is an Academic Professional (APF) position.
