METADATA LIBRARIAN
The University of California, Santa Barbara, one of ten campuses of the University of California system, is seeking dynamic, highly motivated candidates for the position of Metadata Librarian to provide leadership in organizing access to information resources using metadata schema for digital collections and born-digital content in the Library. RESPONSIBILITIES Reporting to Head of Cataloging & Metadata Services (CMS), the Metadata Librarian has responsibility for providing guidance in creating, , reviewing and editing metadata for digital collections and born-digital content in the library, working with colleagues to support the discovery of and access to the Libraries’ digital content through metadata creation, analysis, enrichment, and maintenance according to local and national cataloging and metadata standards. The incumbent is responsible for planning, managing, and reviewing metadata for Library digital projects and Library-led digitization and data management efforts. Defines data elements, recommends usage and determines mapping among metadata schema. Provides training to library personnel in non-MARC metadata creation and maintenance. Participates in the development, evaluation, and implementation of metadata policies, standards, goals, procedures, and workflows in cooperation with necessary stakeholders. May perform original and copy cataloging and assist with catalog database maintenance activities as needed. QUALIFICATIONS Required: ALA accredited MLS. Demonstrated knowledge or experience with two or more non-MARC metadata standards and schemas, such as Dublin Core, EAD, VRACore, MODS, METS, OAI, TEI, XML. Knowledge of trends in information access pertaining to libraries, and metadata librarianship. Ability to work independently and collaboratively, prioritizing work to ensure that departmental and library goals are realized. Excellent organizational skills, proven problem solving ability, and flexibility. Demonstrated initiative in fostering new ideas and in implementing change. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Preferred: Knowledge of conventional cataloging (MARC, AACR2, LCSH, and RDA) and principles of authority control. Working knowledge of Perl, PHP, and XSLT. Knowledge of one or more European languages. Successful project management experience. Experience with Archivists’ Toolkit. Two or more years of professional experience. SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary commensurate with qualifications. Librarians at the University of California, Santa Barbara are professional academic appointees who accrue vacation at the rate of two days per month and sick leave at the rate of one day per month.
