UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA LIBRARY
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

The Opportunity:

The University of Virginia Library seeks an experienced information technology professional, manager, and mentor to serve as the Executive Director for Information Technology. Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, the Executive Director is a member of the library senior leadership team and represents the library in university-wide IT discussions, and in the various national and international communities where library technologists develop shared infrastructure, define standards and best practices, preserve cultural heritage, and promote new library technology.

The UVa Library is a founding member of Fedora Repository, Blacklight, Samvera and APTrust, community-driven software and preservation efforts demonstrating a longstanding and continued commitment to evolving digital stewardship technologies and practices. The Executive Director, working across the Library and with other stakeholders, will help establish and sustain infrastructure, applications and practices stewarding digital assets from creation to access to preservation

As a member of the library senior leadership team, the Executive Director participates in shaping and communicating the library's strategic direction and in allocating the library's human and financial resources. This position directly manages a budget of about $1.2 million annually and 34 full time staff, including four department head direct reports. Areas of responsibility include: information architecture; system and enterprise integration; software development; user experience interfaces and research; open source technologies (instead of “efforts”–lots of folks in the library are working on open source); the integrated library system; repository solutions; information security; as well as support for research and teaching, discovery and access, digital preservation, and metadata.

As an IT professional and leader within the University, the Executive Director has an opportunity to serve in an advisory, steering or consulting capacity with other university IT leaders, and interacts regularly with peers in comparable positions in other institutions and organizations. This work requires effective partnerships in the service of major projects or executive initiatives, cross-institutional strategic planning, and advocacy for the library's needs.

Required Qualifications:

•     Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related field
•     5 years of relevant experience managing technology within higher education or cultural institutions
•     Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to teach workshops and make presentations

Preferred Qualifications:

•     Master's Degree in Computer Science or a related field
•     Project management certification and experience managing complex projects
•     7 years of relevant experience managing technology for a research library
