It is an exciting time to work for the Library Department in Contra Costa County! Our vision is to empower an environment of lifelong learning and cultural enrichment by stimulating learning and literacy, inspiring creativity, and integrating arts, culture and history into the lives of our community. We are seeking qualified individuals to fill permanent full-time, permanent part-time and permanent intermittent Library Assistant-Journey Level vacancies throughout Contra Costa County. Library Assistant-Journey Level responsibilities include helping library patrons locate information, checking-in and out materials, entering patron registrations, updating patron files, and assist with the use of various reference sources, instructing patrons on the use of library resources and assisting at the circulation desk.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record demonstrating the following:
Strong customer service skills
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with a diverse population
Experience using a variety of computer applications and software
Analytical and critical thinking skills
Proficient time management skills

Characteristics of the ideal candidate:
·        Adaptable to work in an environment with direction given from multiple sources with shifting priorities
·        The ability to work effectively under pressure and with interruptions
·        Flexible enough to work independently and cooperatively in a paraprofessional support role or in a team environment
·        Eager to learn new technologies associated with learning resources
·        An interest in books, web-based library tools, references and other information sources

Tentative Written Exams: August 7, 2018


Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience:   Two (2) years full time or its equivalent experience in a customer oriented environment.
Substitution for Education: One (1) year full-time or its equivalent of office support work experience in a public libraryAND two (2) years full-time or its equivalent experience in a customer oriented environmentAND Either 1) possession of 60 semester or 90 quarter units from an accredited college or university which included 15 semester or 18 quarter units in humanities, social science or natural science;OR 2) A Certificate of Library Technology from an accredited college or university; OR 3) Two (2) years of full-time or its equivalent paraprofessional experience in a public library which must have included readers advisory, information services and bibliographic searching.


1.        Application Filing: All applicants must apply on-line and submit the information as indicated on the job announcement by the final filing date. A completed Supplemental Questionnaire is required at the time of applying.
2.        Application Evaluation: Depending on the number of applications received, an Application Evaluation Board may be convened to evaluate and select the best-qualified candidates for invitation to the next phase of the examination.
3.        Written Examination: A multiple-choice written test will be administered to all accepted candidates. Candidates will be tested in job-related dimensions such as: Common library practices, procedures, and terminology, reading and understanding written material, clerical skills/abilities, interpersonal relations and written communication. (Weighted 100%)
4.        Candidates must receive a score of 70 which may be an adjusted score, in order to be ranked on the employment list.
The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with the Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.
