NOTICE OF VACANCY
May 14, 2012

TITLE:          Translational Research and Collaboration Librarian

LOCATION:     Health Sciences Library

THE LIBRARIES:
Among the largest academic research libraries in North America, the University
of Washington Libraries has a collection of more than seven million cataloged
volumes, an equal number in microform format, more than 50,000 serial titles,
and several million items in other formats. Students and faculty recognize the
value provided by the Libraries and rank the Libraries as the most important
source of information for their work. The Libraries also receives the highest
satisfaction rating of any academic service on the surveys of graduating
seniors conducted by the Office of Educational Assessment.

Health Sciences Library (HSL):
The HSL supports 6 health sciences schools; Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry,
Pharmacy, Public Health, and Social Work; 2 academic medical centers; UW
Medical Center (on campus) and the Harborview Medical Center (downtown
Seattle); the growing biomedical and clinical research campus in the South Lake
Union neighborhood of downtown Seattle; the 5-state medical education program
(WWAMI); and, numerous centers, institutes, programs, and affiliated
institutions. The HSL is a unit of the University Libraries. It is a leader
among the national community of academic health sciences libraries and has long
been known for innovative information management programs and services. The HSL
serves as the headquarters for the Pacific Northwest Region, National Network
of Libraries of Medicine.

THE POSITION
Reporting to the Associate Director for Public & Research Services, the
Translational Research & Collaboration Librarian serves as an ambassador for
the Health Sciences Library, promoting library spaces, expertise, and services
to researchers conducting translational and social work research. Using the
recent renovation of the HSL as an opportunity to rethink the role of the
library on campus, this individual will create programming, staffing, and
services to foster an intellectually stimulating environment that nurtures and
invigorates the research process. The incumbent will also be responsible for
keeping abreast of new modes of research in the Clinical Translational Science
Award (CTSA) and Institute of Translational Health Sciences (ITHS), and
consequently develop ad hoc methods of engagement that highlight the library's
role in promoting and furthering this research. The librarian is a member of
the Research & Innovation Services unit and a liaison to the ITHS, School of
Social Work and other departments/schools at the University of Washington.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
"     Responsible for developing collaborative working relationships with
translational researchers and UW's research community; and developing and
implementing a research support service model that will maximize HSL liaisons'
expertise.
"     Designs and launches a research program that will maximize use of the
campus' research collections, participate in the selection of resources for
researchers, and assist with data curation and data discovery projects.
"     Works with other departments within the UW Libraries to provide
research support to ITHS, research laboratories, and ITHS CORES to scholars
across a broad range of disciplines; partners with other coordinators within
the UW libraries to develop, manage, and deliver a unified profile of services
to translational researchers at South Lake Union, UW Medical Center, and
affiliated sites in the WWAMI region.
"     In conjunction with the Associate Director for Public & Research
Services, oversees an in-house training program for librarians and staff on
data curation, big data, next generation depositories, and open access
initiatives, to further the e-science initiatives.
"     Collaborates with UW Libraries colleagues and plays a central role in
marketing research and data support services throughout the UW Libraries
campus-wide including: launching exhibits, seminars, workshops, lectures and
discussion groups, to highlight and promote library resources, as well as
scholarly data tools at UW.
"     Works closely with the University of Washington Schools of Social Work
and Medicine faculty and students to identify and address their research needs,
and to develop new research projects.
"     Keeps abreast of new modes of research in the translational sciences
and develops ad hoc methods of engagement that highlight the library's role in
promoting and furthering this research, including demonstrations of emerging
scholarly resources and technologies to interested faculty, students, staff,
librarians, the research community, and library supporters.
"     Works with the HSL Director, the Associate Director for Public &
Research Services, and the Head of Systems on long-range strategic planning for
new initiatives, projects, exhibits, events, and grants.
"     Partners with other campus stakeholders to position the library as a
bridge between researchers in different fields to facilitate interdisciplinary
scholarship.
"     Identifies and implements suitable assessment tools to capture the full
breadth of qualitative and quantitative data related to translational support
services.


QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
"     Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library
Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies
degree.
"     Demonstrated commitment to diversity and understanding of the
contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.
"     Capacity to thrive in the exciting, ambiguous, future-oriented
environment of a world-class research institution and to respond effectively to
changing needs and priorities.
"     Experience with developing programs intended to provide innovative
library service researcher and/or students conducting research.
"     Demonstrated understanding of the academic library's role in research,
teaching and learning and knowledge of higher education and curriculum.
"     Record of providing substantial outreach services to faculty and
academic program leaders on campus and/or participation in collaborative
projects.
"     Ability to articulate a vision for research support services and
programming to encourage and sustain scholarly engagement with library
collections and resources.
"     Outstanding organizational and analytical skills to lead multiple
projects. Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and complete tasks and
projects on time and within budget and to be present in the workplace during
normal working hours.
"     Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal
skills.
"     Demonstrated proficiency and capabilities with personal computers and
software, the Web, and library-relevant information technology applications.
"     Ability to initiate and maintain cooperative working relationships with
co-workers, supervisors, and managers. Ability and skill in fostering teamwork
among others.
"     Working knowledge of standard computer office applications such as
Microsoft Outlook, Work, Excel, Access, PowerPoint or other productivity
software.
"     Ability to follow directions from supervisors (and to provide clear
directions to staff and student employees).

Preferred:
"     Completion of the National Library of Medicine Associate Fellowship
preferred and/or interest in health sciences librarianship.
"     Evidence of continuing scholarship and research.
"     Proven success in developing partnerships with other academic units as
well as with libraries at local, regional and state level.


SALARY:     $ 42,600 minimum. Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and
background.


BENEFITS:     Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the
University of Washington Retirement Plan on a matching basis. Vacation is
accrued at the rate of 24 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12
working days per year. No state or local income tax.
