Librarian Faculty Position
Position: Authority Metadata Librarian
Unit: Metadata Services
Reports To: Head, Metadata Services

SUMMARY:
Northwestern University Libraries seek an innovative and service-oriented Authority Metadata Librarian to provide management and leadership for the Libraries' creation, enrichment, and maintenance of authority metadata. Under the supervision of the Head, Metadata Services, the Authority Metadata Librarian ensures the internal consistency of the Libraries' Alma database of over 7 million bibliographic records and develops and manages workflows and processes to support this work. This position shapes the identity management policies and authority work of the Libraries while collaborating closely with colleagues to support the users and collections of Northwestern University Libraries.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
•     Manages authority control processes using Alma, OCLC, and other tools as needed to ensure the internal consistency of the Libraries' Alma library platform
•     Oversees quality control for bibliographic and authority metadata. Analyzes potential corrections and executes batch changes in the Alma system to manage and update bibliographic, holdings, and item data
•     Collaborates closely with the Libraries' NACO liaison for the Libraries' management of name authority work
•     Maintains knowledge of current and emerging issues and trends in identity management and authority metadata, including linked data, BIBFRAME, and semantic web developments
•     Develops and analyzes internal reports in order to implement catalog and metadata remediation and enrichment projects based on changes in metadata standards and preparations for emerging technologies
•     Performs some original and complex copy cataloging using Alma, OCLC, RDA, LCSH, LCC, and other tools as needed. Works with both MARC and non-MARC metadata in all formats, languages, and subjects as needed to support the Northwestern University Libraries' collections
•     Creates authority records at the national level
•     Participates in national cooperative cataloging initiatives, including NACO, BIBCO, SACO, and OCLC Enhance
•     Collaborates with colleagues at Galter Health Sciences Library, Pritzker Legal Research Center, Styberg Library, and NU-Qatar Library on authority control policies and practices
•     Consults across the Libraries on the authority control of other systems, such as ArchivesSpace
•     Collaborates with the Libraries' ORCID liaison on researcher identity management systems and policies
•     Creates and maintains documentation for areas of responsibility
•     Participates in appropriate professional development, continuing education, national-level professional service, or research activities
•     Performs related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
•     Master's degree in librarianship, or related field
•     Two years of experience creating bibliographic and authority metadata
•     Experience with metadata format and content standards, including RDA and MARC21
•     Familiarity with authority control processes
•     Knowledge of current trends in metadata and cataloging standards and technologies
•     Awareness of and interest in emerging technologies, including linked data
•     Interest in professional engagement and contribution, such as research, publication, and involvement in pertinent professional and scholarly organizations
•     Reading knowledge of at least one foreign language

MINIMUM COMPETENCIES:
•     Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-based environment
•     Excellent oral and written communication skills
•     Demonstrates initiative, takes ownership of work, completes what is needed without being asked, and follows through on projects
•     Has strong attention to detail and demonstrates highly effective problem-solving and analytical skills
•     Aptitude for using technology to improve processes that support data quality and long-term data management

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
•     NACO certification completed, or in process
•     Experience with Alma and OCLC
•     Experience with non-MARC metadata schemas
•     Experience with XML, XSLT, SQL, OpenRefine, and/or MarcEdit
•     Working knowledge of identity management systems, including ORCID and VIAF
