TITLE: Instructional Design and Outreach Services Librarian

LOCATION:   Reference and Research Services Division



THE LIBRARIES:

Among the largest academic research libraries in North America, the University of Washington Libraries has a collection of more than seven million cataloged volumes, an equal number in microform format, more than 50,000 serial titles, and several million items in other formats. Students and faculty recognize the value provided by the Libraries and rank the Libraries as the most important source of information for their work. The Libraries also receives the highest satisfaction rating of any academic service on the surveys of graduating seniors conducted by the Office of Educational Assessment. The Libraries was commended in the University’s 2003 accreditation review for its rich collection, well-qualified staff, and “exceptional service to students, staff development, and a commitment to planning and assessment of service.”



THE REFERENCE AND RESEARCH SERVICES DIVISION:

The Instructional Design and Outreach Services Librarian reports to the Head of the Reference and Research Services Division. The Division provides virtual and on-site information and reference services in the humanities, social sciences, many of the sciences, and international studies. Information Services, Suzzallo Reference, Government Publications, Maps, the Microforms and Newspaper collection, Data Services, and the Research Commons comprise the Division. Librarians provide consultation, reference, and instruction services for their academic departments.



THE POSITION

The University of Washington Libraries seeks an energetic librarian to provide instructional and outreach services support to subject liaison librarians working with fee-based degree programs. The Instructional Design and Outreach Services Librarian is a key member of the Libraries Teaching and Learning Group, playing a leadership role in collaborating with and assisting subject liaison librarians in the development of innovative services and tools for face-to-face, hybrid, and online instructional efforts. The position is also responsible for maintaining communication with designated staff at UW Professional and Continuing Education.


SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

·        Works one-on-one with UW Seattle subject liaison librarians who have fee-based degree programs in their departments to identify and support instructional goals and assist with the development of in-person, online, and hybrid information literacy instruction.

·        Provides leadership and expertise in developing, promoting, and assessing scalable information literacy initiatives for UW fee-based degree programs.

·        Develops benchmarks for online instruction at the UW Libraries and works with subject liaison librarians to integrate and assess Libraries Learning Goals in online instruction efforts.

·        Collaborates with the Libraries Teaching and Learning Group to develop and provide staff training and support for Libraries’ online instructional tools.

·        Works with Libraries and campus partners to integrate library services and resources into campus websites and course management systems (e.g., Moodle, Canvas, Blackboard, MyUW).

·        Supports subject liaison librarians in promoting Libraries services to fee-based programs by providing them with tools and resources.

·        Coordinates library service to the Undergraduate Evening Degree program, providing orientations and student consultations. May teach a credit-bearing research strategies course that meets in the evening.

·        Works with the Director of Assessment and Planning and the Teaching and Learning Group to assess and determine best practices for online instruction and outreach to fee-based programs.

·        Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates student staff who assist in providing and evaluating outreach services to students and faculty involved in fee-based degree programs.

·        Participates in staffing the Libraries virtual reference and information service.



QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

·        Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree.

·        Demonstrated commitment to diversity and understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.

·        Commitment to working with diverse student and community populations.

·        Coursework, degree, experience in or familiarity with instructional design and/or educational technology.

·        Experience creating effective instructional and informational materials such as online tutorials, surveys, and guides.

·        Ability to work independently and with others in a demanding and rapidly changing environment where consultation, collaboration, and cooperation are valued and essential.

·        Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills, written and oral communication skills, and commitment to excellence in providing public services.

·        Evidence of initiative, creativity, and resourcefulness in previous responsibilities.



Preferred:

·        Experience consulting or working with faculty, staff, librarians, or students on course and assignment design.

·        Minimum of one year post-MLS experience in an academic library.

·        Knowledge of basic instructional design concepts (ADDIE, etc.)

·        Experience with learning outcomes assessment

·        Experience in providing library user education and virtual reference services.

·        Demonstrated knowledge of and interest in current and emerging trends in information technology and their application to library services.

·        Demonstrated leadership skills or project management experience.





SALARY:        $42,600 minimum. Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and background. This is a full-time position.

BENEFITS:     Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the University of Washington Retirement Plan on a matching basis. Vacation is accrued at the rate of 24 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per year. No state or local income tax.
