The Wright State University Libraries seek a knowledgeable and creative librarian to provide direction in the promotion, development, implementation, and assessment of library instruction. Through a spirit of collaboration, the librarian will advance and expand a robust, student-centered library instruction program, strengthen instructional design, and pursue the application of instructional technology to enhance the effectiveness of library instruction.

Job Purpose:

As a member of the Reference and Instruction Department reporting to the Department Head, the Librarian for Instructional Design and Assessment will provide leadership and direction for the advancement of existing and the creation of new library instruction programs, projects and initiatives. The librarian will stay abreast of current trends in library instruction theory and practical instructional techniques in order to disseminate information to University Libraries staff. The librarian will conduct assessment of student learning and evaluation of the overall effectiveness of instructional services. He/she will contribute to reference and instruction services and as a liaison to academic departments.


This position is involved in an array of activities, including but not limited to those listed below.

·        Makes recommendations to develop new instructional programs, classroom activities and online instructional tools. This includes expanding information and digital literacy efforts and increasing the libraries’ online support services for instruction

·        Conducts assessment of student learning and evaluation of the overall effectiveness of instructional services

·        Coordinates the library’s credit-course program - EDT1100

·        Assists instruction librarians in the development of programmatic assessment models that measure the impact of library instruction on student learning

·        Coordinates the Department’s role in new faculty orientation

·        Identifies and promotes training opportunities for librarians in instructional design and incorporating technology to support pedagogy

·        Oversees the development and maintenance of library instruction web pages and research guides (LibGuides).

·        Reports the activities, effectiveness and needs of the instruction program to the Department Head through statistical analysis and reports

·        Contributes to reference service in a variety of formats, including evening and weekend shifts

·        Serves as a liaison to academic departments and campus offices in assigned subject areas

·        Provides course-related library instruction in assigned subject areas and first-year courses, teaching multiple sessions per semester in the use of research tools and the development of information and digital literacy skills

·        Actively participates in the development and performance of the Libraries’ programs, policies, teams, and committees; serves on the Assessment Committee

·        Participates in scholarly and professional activities and ongoing continuing education

Experience and Qualifications:

Required: MLS degree from an ALA-accredited program; minimum of 3 years of experience in an academic library in a reference and instruction role; substantive teaching experience and effective presentation skills; experience with instructional design and the development and implementation of web-based instructional tools, including course management systems to support on-campus and distance learning; knowledge of formal assessment of instruction; knowledge of current theory, practices, and issues related to information literacy instruction; ability to provide leadership through effective planning, organizational and project management skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to work collegially with internal and external campus constituents; strong commitment to excellent customer relations and user-centered library services; ability to encourage innovation and creativity

Preferred: Record of success in implementing innovative instruction services; effective use of instructional technologies and courseware in teaching; experience in administering assessment instruments or carrying out other assessment methods; experience with digital literacy instruction; bachelor’s or second master’s in education.
