Position: Head of Special Collections Research and Instructional Services
Available: January 1, 2013
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks an experienced, collaborative, collegial, innovative, and user-focused individual to lead the Research and Instructional Services Department (R&IS) of the Louis Round Wilson Special Collections Library (http://www.lib.unc.edu/wilson/). Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Special Collections, the individual in this position will be responsible for managing research and instructional services programs for special collections serving a broad range of users, including UNC faculty, undergraduates, and graduate students; researchers from around the world; and the general public. R&IS provides a common set of services and policies for special collections users, while providing subject expertise in the areas represented by the constituent special collections. These shared services include a registration and use-tracking system, reading rooms, and collection shelving areas. The department has a staff of 8 professionals and support staff, as well as interns, graduate assistants, and undergraduate student employees. Staff members from other special collections departments also participate in research and instructional activities.
The successful candidate for this position will demonstrate a deep commitment to world-class user services, a solid understanding of current and emerging user needs, and exceptional ability to manage a complex service environment for special collections. The person in this position will develop and implement a program of regular outreach, consultation, and assessment with faculty, students, and other special collections users to ensure that Wilson’s services and policies meet their evolving needs for both research and instructional endeavors.
As department head, the incumbent will provide leadership and administration in special collections for research and reference services, instructional programs, stacks management, user information channels, permissions and reproduction services, and record-keeping and reporting. He/she will directly supervise three professional staff members and will ensure that all staff members that have research and instructional services responsibilities are properly trained. The department head will ensure that policies and procedures that meet professionally accepted standards for the use of special collections are in place and are communicated clearly to users and staff. The department head is responsible for identifying and developing requests for staff, space, financial, and other resources needed to carry out the department’s work. The incumbent will participate in the direct delivery of research and instructional services, including regular shifts on the reference desks and classroom instruction.
As a member of the Wilson Library management group, the Head of R&IS will collaborate with curatorial, technical services, and conservation staff to plan and implement special collections goals, priorities, standards, policies, and workflows, and to promote expanded use of special collections at UNC. The incumbent will also work closely with special collections staff throughout special collections and with staff of other University Library departments, including the Carolina Digital Library and Archives and Library Systems, to ensure that a research and instructional services perspective is incorporated into all aspects of special collections functions and activities, and that research and instructional priorities and activities support collection goals, and will participate in library-wide coordination/collaborations (e.g., the Library’s Services Steering Committee).
The Head will be active in the library or archival profession and support the activities of the department's staff in professional organizations and working groups concerned with special collections issues. He/she will ensure that the Wilson Library adopts and contributes to the development of relevant standards and participates in professional discussions on research and instruction for special collections in academic and research libraries.
The Louis Round Wilson Library includes the North Carolina Collection, the Rare Book Collection, the Southern Historical Collection, the Southern Folklife Collection, and University Archives and Records Management Services. Together they hold rich, diverse, and growing special collections of manuscripts, archives, rare books, pamphlets, government documents, newspapers, historical monographs, periodicals, maps, photographs, moving image and audio recordings, and digital materials.
Required: ALA-accredited master's degree in library or information science, preferred, or Master's degree in history, English, or related discipline with relevant experience. Minimum of five years professional experience as a research and instructional services librarian or archivist in a special collection or archival repository. Substantive experience managing research and instructional services in a special collections repository, including supervising professional and support staff. Demonstrated knowledge of professional standards governing the use of special collections. Demonstrated knowledge of discovery tools used to provide access to special collections. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to set priorities and accomplish goals. Demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of users and constituencies. Active participation in appropriate professional organizations. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred: Experience in working with curatorial, technical services, conservation, and digital library staff to develop goals for cataloging, processing, and digitization to meet user needs. Experience with assessment and user feedback methodologies and tools. Demonstrated subject expertise in one or more areas relevant to the holdings of the Wilson Library Special Collections. Experience in developing requirements for and managing automated access and management systems. Experience in developing and administering grants or fundraising initiatives.

This is a twelve-month academic librarian appointment; salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
