Job Information:
The University of Southern California (USC), founded in 1880, is located in the heart of downtown L.A. and is the largest private employer in the City of Los Angeles. USC Libraries' East Asian Library (EAL) is seeking a Library Supervisor to join its team. Fluency in at least one of the following East Asian languages is preferred: Chinese, Japanese, and/or Korean.

The EAL Library Supervisor oversees the daily operations and processing functions of the East Asian Library and serves as the key operational link between the EAL and Doheny Library Access Services department. The EAL Library Supervisor manages student assistants for maintenance of the book stacks, transfers to Grand Library, shelving of materials, processing of serials and multimedia collections. Other duties include: bindery operations, receipt of new titles, collating of monthly library statistics. The individual will also participate in the staffing of the Doheny Integrated Circulation Desk and serve as the primary person responsible for the East Asian public service functions and operations at the Doheny service point.

Job Accountabilities:

* Supervises students in maintaining the order of EAL bookstacks, including shelving, shifting, and weeding/transferring books from Doheny Library to Grand Library. Supervises students on processing of East Asian newly cataloged books and other materials.

* Acts as a liaison between the EAL and Doheny Access Services staff. Attends EAL meetings and reports information back to the Doheny Library Manager and Doheny circulation staff. Delivers information/updates to the faculty and staff of EAL and Doheny.

* Oversees the binding of current journals, including the collating of serials volumes to be found and preparation of appropriate binding forms.

* Schedules, assigns, and prioritizes workloads on a daily basis. Sets appropriate goals and deadlines. Ensures timely completion of unit's work. Assigns and monitors progress on work assignments and special projects.

* Prepares and ensures accuracy and completeness of all personnel paperwork as required including payroll documentation.

* Provides assistance to library patrons using electronic databases, electronic journals, and electronic reference materials within a tiered service environment.

* Assists library management with administrative duties related to planning, budgeting, special projects, and day-to-day operations.

* Oversees system-wide procedures governing the creation, updating and deletion of data in library databases. Oversees quality control measures for the library system's patron database and/or other library systems. Provides assistance in accessing and interpreting records and transactions, resolving discrepancies, and communicating the results.

Minimum Qualifications:      

Minimum Education: Associate's degree
Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education

Minimum Experience: 3 years
Combined education/experience as substitute for minimum experience

Minimum Field of Expertise: Experience in and comprehensive knowledge of library operations. Knowledge of computers and information retrieval systems. Supervisory ability. Knowledge of preservation of materials and related equipment usage.   


Preferred Qualifications      

Preferred Education: Bachelor's degree

Preferred Experience: Preference will be given to candidates who are fluent in at least one of the following East Asian languages: Chinese, Japanese, Korean.

Preferred Field of Expertise: Library technology experience in a special library. Supervisory experience. Administrative support service experience in a related field.
