Position Announcement

Texas A&M University Libraries seeks a creative and energetic professional to join the Texas A&M University Libraries as University Archivist. This position would be responsible for maintaining and promoting the archives of Texas A&M University and will work closely with Records Management. Appointment at the rank of Clinical Associate Professor carries faculty status and responsibilities to meet both the Libraries’ and the University’s requirements for promotion. Qualified applicants will hold the Clements Professorship.

Position Description: Reporting to the Director of Cushing Memorial Library and Archives, the University Archivist will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the University Archives and will be the primary spokesperson for Texas A&M history on behalf of the Libraries. Responsibilities include coordinating the identification, appraisal, acquisition, storage, access, preservation and disposal of university archives; organizing collections; creating archival based descriptions; providing online and in-house reference services. Additional responsibilities include onsite visits to investigate, assess, and acquire potential collections; participating in instructional sessions and outreach programs to the campus community; collaborating in exhibit design and fabrication; participating in digitization initiatives; and assisting in the development of the Cushing’s website. May require occasional weekend responsibilities.   This includes oversight responsibilities for the Clements Papers and any associated digitization initiatives.
     
Required Qualifications:
•     Graduate degree in history or related field with current certification by the Academy of Certified Archivists and/or American Library Association (ALA)-accredited Master’s degree (or equivalent) with emphasis on archival work, history, or related discipline
•     At least three years of professional archival experience
•     Knowledge of records management principles
•     Excellent oral and written communication skills
•     Evidence of successful project management
•     Demonstrated commitment to providing customer service
•     Experience working successfully with persons from culturally diverse backgrounds

Desired Qualifications:
•     PhD or second Masters in related discipline
•     Four or more years of professional archival experience
•     Knowledge of Texas A&M University history and traditions
•     Knowledge of Texas history
•     Demonstrated experience with donor relations
•     Experience with digitization initiatives or institutional repositories
•     Certificate of Records Management (CRM)
•     Experience in the creation of exhibits or exhibit fabrication
•     Demonstrated interpersonal and teamwork skills complemented by the ability to take initiative
•     Familiarity with major archival management software (e.g., Archon, Archivists’ Toolkit, Archive IT)
•     Reading knowledge of other languages, preferably Spanish

The Libraries: Texas A&M University Libraries is a member of Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and is the University's principal research and information center, providing 4.5 million volumes, 5.7 million microforms, 91,580 print and electronic serial titles, 557,777 electronic books, and over 1000 databases. The University Libraries ranks 18th among ARL libraries in materials expenditures, with an acquisition budget of $13.5 million. There is a total budgeted staff of 242, including 75 librarians with faculty status. Librarians work in a sophisticated online environment utilizing Voyager, SFX, Metalib, CORAL and a full range of electronic resources.
The Cushing Memorial Library and Archives is the rare books, special collections, manuscripts, and archival repository for Texas A&M University Libraries. The collections of the Cushing Memorial Library and Archives reflect the comprehensive nature of the educational and research enterprise at Texas A&M University as well as the wide diversity of interests of current and former students, faculty, staff and friends. The collections span the breadth of recorded history, from Sumerian clay tablets dating from 2400 BCE to contemporary science fiction paperbacks. These collections comprise over 22,000 linear feet of manuscript and archival material, approximately 200,000 printed volumes, over 300,000 photographs, hundreds of original works of art ranging from oil paintings to pastels to sculpture, and many individual artifacts. Collection strengths and interests of the Cushing Library include military history, science fiction, western Americana, 19th-century American prints and illustrators, modern politics, Texana, natural history, Africana, Hispanic studies, ornithology, nautical archaeology, 18th-century French history and culture, Mexican colonial history, the history of books and printing, the history of Texas A&M, and selected literary collections.
Salary/Benefits/Rank: This is a faculty position with the classification of Clinical Associate Professor (non-tenure track). Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Excellent benefits include health plan and paid life insurance; several retirement plans including TIAA-CREF; paid holidays and vacation; no state or local income tax.
