VISITING COLLECTIONS CARE COORDINATOR

PRESERVATION AND CONSERVATION PROGRAM

Visiting Academic Professional (2 year, half-time position)

University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign



Position Available: This position is available as soon as possible. This is a 50% time, two year visiting Academic Professional position in the University Library. This position has the potential to be made permanent at a later date.



Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Head of Preservation and Conservation, the Collections Care Coordinator will establish programs and workflows in support of the care of the University Library’s massive book, journal, newspaper, and other paper-based collections, as well as managing preventative maintenance operations within the larger preservation program, including environmental monitoring, integrated pest management and stack maintenance issues related to preservation. Specific duties include:



·        Systematically survey collections and establish workflows for the preventative preservation of paper-based collections

·        Prepare recommendations for disaster planning and recovery for the Preservation Unit

·        Contribute expertise to the development of a broader paper-based preservation program with specific attention toward ensuring use of best practices for environmental monitoring, integrated pest management, and stacks maintenance

·        Maintain critical working relationships with units and groups that are engaged in preservation, curation, and access to paper-based Library materials; including units such as Content Access Management, University Archives, Collection Management Services, and other appropriate campus units.

·        Serve as a point person for questions related to preservation and damaged paper-based material that cannot be answered by high-level Library staff; questions will be escalated to Preservation Librarian as needed

·        May assist in the preparation of grant proposals



Other related duties may be assigned as the incumbent gains familiarity with the position and institutional environment.

The Preservation and Conservation Program at the University of Illinois Library operates with the holistic vision of developing a comprehensive management program for the entire library system. The Conservation Unit consists of both collections conservation as well as special collections conservation. The unit also assists in the education, planning and development of the overall preservation program for the Library. Qualifications

Required: Bachelor’s degree; Demonstrated knowledge of book and paper preservation and/or conservation principles and practices as evidenced by coursework or work experience; Prior professional or pre-professional experience in a library or archives environment.



Preferred:   Master’s degree in Library and Information Science and/or Conservation, from a recognized program; Supervisory experience; One or more years working collaboratively in an academic library and/or archives; Demonstrated experience in dealing with the intellectual issues involved in the use of research library collections; Demonstrated experience with environmental monitoring, pest management, or disaster planning in a library or museum environment.



Salary.   Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and credentials.   



Terms of Appointment: This is a 50% time position
