REFERENCE & DIGITAL PROJECTS RESIDENT

The Swarthmore College Libraries seek a creative, technically-grounded and visionary recent MLS/MLIS graduate or CLIR fellow for a Reference and Digital Projects Resident. The ideal candidate will display a strong commitment to and interest in research, instruction and digital scholarship. The incumbent will report to the Head of Research and Instruction and as part of the Reference Department may serve as the Library’s liaison to one or more departments.

This is an evolving position that requires curiosity about the relationship between technology and research, and enthusiasm for collaborating with students, faculty, and staff colleagues in an exciting and dynamic intellectual environment. Swarthmore College is a highly selective liberal arts college in suburban Philadelphia with present enrollment of about 1500 undergraduates. Working at Swarthmore offers the opportunity to interact with an intellectually engaged student body and faculty dedicated to an academically rigorous liberal arts curriculum. Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of the Reference and Digital Projects Resident will draw on their particular skills, experience and disciplinary knowledge, but will include the following:

Providing in-person, phone, chat, and e-mail reference service for faculty, students, alumni and visitors.
Acting as liaison to Black Studies, Latin American Studies, and other ethnic studies areas, the Intercultural Center, and the Black Cultural Center. Responsibilities include collection development, instruction, and outreach to faculty and students.
Initiating and leading a collaborative digital project to document, for example, the histories of student groups affiliated with the Intercultural Center and Black Cultural Center
Participating fully as a member of the Public Services team
Leading and supporting students interested in digital scholarship projects.
Qualifications:
Required

Applicants must have a recent ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS (2011 or later) or have recently completed the CLIR Postdoctoral Fellowship in Academic Libraries.
Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment yet also works independently.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills, able to interact effectively with faculty, staff and students.
Initiative, flexibility, and a strong service orientation are essential.
Good organizational skills with ability to work independently and creatively.
Experience working on projects in the digital humanities or excellent project management skills with experience in overseeing technology-based projects.
Working knowledge of a content management system, such as WordPress or Drupal.
Preferred:

Working knowledge of the principles and practices of web design and development, including applications and scripting languages, such as the Adobe suite, HTML5, or PHP.
Experience or coursework in reference or teaching at a post-secondary level.
Some evening and weekend hours may be required.
Working knowledge of other technologies, such as streaming media and digitization, and current programming languages, XML or SQL.
