Academic Professional Position
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Position Available: The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. This is a 100%, twelve-month, Academic Professional appointment.

Responsibilities: The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks a collaborative and service-oriented professional for the position of Manager, Researcher Information Systems. The successful candidate will manage and implement a set of researcher information systems, including a researcher profile system (based on the Elsevier Pure Experts Portal – formerly Scival Experts) and a researcher identifier system (ORCID), and will work in close collaboration with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR), the campus academic technology unit (CITES), the University’s administrative computing unit (AITS), college and departmental research officers, and colleagues within the University Library. Reporting to the Coordinator of the campus IDEALS institutional repository <https://ideals.illinois.edu/>, this position sits within the Library’s growing program of research support services.

Duties include:
·        Manage the implementation of a researcher profile service and related researcher information support services, including the ORCID researcher identification registry, provided for Urbana campus researchers by the Library in partnership with the OVCR;
·        Develop project timelines and milestones and coordinate the successful completion of activities in the timeline(s), working with stakeholders in the OVCR, faculty in colleges and research centers and institutes; the Library, other campus units as appropriate (e.g., CITES, AITS), and external organizations, including commercial service providers;
·        Promote the use and uptake of these services on campus through instructional and training outreach and marketing activities with researchers, staff who support research activities in colleges and research centers and institutes, and campus leadership;
·        Coordinate communication, outreach, and training with the audiences supported by the service, including faculty and other researchers on campus, as well as colleges and units, and campus leadership;
·        Manage the operational aspects of researcher information services, including staff supervision, work assignments, quality review of data and system functions;
·        Establish liaisons with college and departmental research support officers to provide a mechanism for data entry and editing of publication citations, grant information, patents, and awards information into the faculty profiles system.

Some investigations originating in this manner may evolve into regular work assignments or production activities.

The University of Illinois Library is known for its pioneering work in library access and discovery technologies, including federated search, Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH), and more recently through its involvement in the CIC (Committee on Institutional Cooperation) large scale digitization projects including Google and Internet Archive, Digital Public Library of America, and the HathiTrust Research Center (HTRC).

Qualifications: Required: Bachelor's degree; demonstrated experience managing large, complex web-based projects with multiple stakeholders; supervisory experience; demonstrated ability to work independently; demonstrated ability to meet production deadlines and goals; strong oral and written communication skills; demonstrated professional experience supporting research systems in an academic setting; an understanding of the diversity of the scholarly communication system within an academic setting.
Preferred: Advanced degree in Library and Information Science, Management Information Science, or related field; 2 years of professional experience in program coordination or management in an academic setting; experience creating documentation and prioritizing needs in an institutional environment; demonstrated experience developing and delivering training materials and workshops; experience with database construction and use; experience with scholarly communication systems, demonstrated ability to work with a diverse constituency; demonstrated experience with program planning; ability to work in a collaborative team environment; ability to successfully handle multiple priorities; and strong customer service skills.

Salary and Rank: Salary range $55K - $65K and commensurate with credentials and experience.

Terms of Appointment: Academic Professionals have twelve-month appointments; 24 annual vacation days; 11 annual paid holidays; 12 annual sick-leave days (cumulative), plus an additional 13 sick-leave days (non-cumulative) available, if needed, each year; health insurance requiring a small co-payment is provided to employee (with the option to purchase coverage for spouse and dependents); required participation in State Universities Retirement System (SURS) (8% of annual salary is withheld and is refundable upon termination), with several options for participation in additional retirement plans; newly-hired employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security and are subject to its deduction.
