VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT POSITION TITLE The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for Associate Dean for Research and Education in its University Libraries. PROFILE of the LIBRARIES and the RESEARCH and EDUCATION DIVISION ROLE of the POSITION University Libraries is comprised of Lied Library and three branch libraries.  We are a gateway to more than 20,000 electronic journals, 1.7 million books, including more than 500,000 e-books, and extensive special collections that actively document and preserve the history of Southern Nevada. The University Libraries is home to two renowned research centers: the Center for Gaming Research and the Oral History Research Center. The Associate Dean for the Research and Education (RED) Division directly supervises four department heads and three branch heads, and has overall responsibility for 40 staff members, of which 20 are library faculty.  RED departments include the Library Liaisons Program, Educational Initiatives, New Media Services, User Services, and three branch libraries - the Architecture Studies Library, the Curriculum Materials Library, and the Music Library. Other areas within the scope of RED are campus outreach and collaborations, campus communications, public technology, and public space planning. The Research and Education Division (RED) fosters collaborations that contribute to our users' academic success, research, and lifelong learning. The Division positively impacts student learning and supports the research and scholarly agenda of the University. University Libraries’ vision is to define the new academic research library—bringing people and information together in innovative ways. As UNLV emerges as a leading urban research institution, the Libraries will pioneer dynamic, user-focused methods of reaching, connecting, and engaging researchers and learners. The Associate Dean for Research and Education will play a key leadership role in realizing this vision. Reporting to the Dean of University Libraries, this position is part of the Libraries’ senior management team and leads the Research and Education Division (RED) providing direction, oversight and leadership in several areas of strategic emphasis: Building initiatives and fostering collaborations that positively impact student learning and support the research and scholarly endeavors of the University.  Leading space planning efforts to ensure that UNLV Libraries’ spaces, both physical and virtual,  evolve in response to next-generation technologies, user expectations, and patterns in learning and research collaboration Overseeing the service integrity of the Libraries at all service desks and interactions Collaborating with campus partners and playing a leadership role in campus relations to integrate the Libraries in support of the campus educational and research mission. The Associate Dean represents the Libraries’ interests on a wide range of initiatives and standing groups, such as Associate Deans for Research and Associate Deans for Academic Affairs.          The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to work in a complex, changing environment with a positive, flexible attitude. He or she will have a proven capacity to build innovative programs and services in support of teaching and research and to develop and grow a motivated and knowledgeable staff. As a tenured library faculty member, the incumbent will be expected to work collaboratively, effectively, and collegially in teams with staff at all levels, as well as with faculty and students; engage in scholarly activities; and provide service to the university, the community, and the profession in accordance with Libraries and University standards for promotion and tenure. QUALIFICATIONS Required: A master's degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association Minimum seven years of experience in increasingly responsible management positions in an academic library Experience in developing library policy, articulating vision and providing leadership and direction towards achieving strategic goals Significant experience in the development and implementation of educational initiatives Demonstrated knowledge of the research lifecycle, and experience in the development and implementation of services in support of research Demonstrated knowledge of trends and issues in higher education that impact teaching and research Demonstrated commitment to user-focused services and working collaboratively and constructively with a wide range of groups and individuals Evidence of excellent organization skills and sound judgment Ability to resolve conflict and manage change; evidence of energy, creativity, initiative and commitment to professional growth Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work independently and collegially Demonstrated experience in developing working partnerships with academic departments and other campus communities Demonstrated project management experience Experience, reputation, and scholarship record sufficient to meet criteria for appointment as a tenured faculty member Preferred: experience with space planning, experience with assessment methods that demonstrate value of libraries to institutional mission; knowledge of scholarly communication landscape and role of libraries in data lifecycle management; experience  writing successful grant proposals; experience in maintaining donor relationships. SALARY RANGE This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position at Rank III or IV (equivalent to an Associate Professor or Professor). Salaries are competitive with those at similarly situated institutions and dependent upon labor market. Position is contingent upon funding.
