PROFILE of the LIBRARIES and the RESEARCH and EDUCATION DIVISION
As a strong partner in student learning, UNLV Libraries fosters critical thinking and lifelong learning with innovative services, entrepreneurial staff, outstanding digital collections, up-to-date technology and internationally renowned Special Collections, including two research centers: the Center for Gaming Research and the Oral History Research Center. University Libraries is comprised of Lied Library and three branch libraries and we are a gateway to more than 20,000 electronic journals and 1.7 million books, including e-books. The Research and Education (RED) Division has four departments and three branch libraries, with 40 staff members, of which 20 are library faculty. RED includes the Library Liaisons Program, Educational Initiatives, New Media Services, User Services, and the Architecture Studies Library, the Curriculum Materials Library, and the Music Library. Other areas within the scope of RED are campus outreach and collaborations, campus communications, public technology, and public space planning.

The Research and Education Division (RED) fosters collaborations that contribute to our users' academic success, research, and lifelong learning. The Division positively impacts student learning and supports the research and scholarly agenda of the University.

ROLE of the POSITION
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Libraries seeks innovative, collaborative, user-focused applicants for the position of Social Sciences Data Librarian. This position will provide expert support for faculty and students in the social sciences who are working with geospatial, numeric and other data. This includes assistance in the discovery, use and manipulation of data, and instruction in methodologies and tools. This position also serves as a liaison to the departments of anthropology, sociology and political science. The incumbent will also play a key role in the Libraries' strategic initiatives to acquire and manage data.

Reporting to the Head of the Library Liaison Program, responsibilities include: providing instruction on the use of published statistics, statistical software and other tools that support data-intensive research; taking a leading role in the acquisition and access to social sciences collections and data sets; and collaborating across departments in the Libraries on issues related to the access to and use of data. As part of the liaison program, this position will teach curriculum-integrated instructional sessions at all degree levels, collaborate with teaching faculty to develop course content; assess student learning; and create online tools and user guides.

Liaison librarians proactively develop partnerships with faculty to develop and deliver value-added services as well as new methods of delivering existing services to support the University's research and teaching initiatives. The successful candidates will have demonstrated the ability to work in a complex, changing environment with a positive, flexible, and innovative attitude, and he or she will have a proven capacity to work effectively and collegially in teams with staff at all levels, as well as with faculty and students.

As a tenure-track library faculty member, the incumbent will also be expected to engage in scholarly activities; and provide service to the university, the community, and the profession in accordance with Libraries and University standards for promotion and tenure.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
A master's degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association. Knowledge of social science research methodologies and familiarity with quantitative and/or qualitative data research tools. Familiarity with information literacy theory, practice, and assessment. Knowledge of emerging information technologies and their application to research and teaching. Understanding of current trends and issues in scholarly publishing and communication. Demonstrated success in a collaborative environment. Evidence of energy, creativity, initiative and commitment to professional growth. Excellent oral and written communication skills. The ability to prioritize workload assignments.
Preferred:
Relevant undergraduate or graduate degree in the social sciences or sciences, or significant discipline-specific experience in an academic library. Demonstrated experience with quantitative data services and software such as SPSS, Stata or SAS. Demonstrated experience using qualitative data analysis software such as NVivo and Atlas.ti. Experience with the use and manipulation of social science and government datasets, including census data, regional data and ICPSR. Experience with geographic information systems (GIS), such as ArcGIS. Experience with data visualization tools. Knowledge or familiarity with data curation and management. Academic library experience with research assistance and information literacy instruction. Teaching experience or experience in instructional design in a higher education, library, or secondary education setting. Experience in developing working partnerships with academic departments and other campus communities. Demonstrated experience with project management.

SALARY RANGE
This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position at Rank II or III (equivalent to an Assistant or Associate Professor). Salaries are competitive with those at similarly situated institutions and dependent upon labor market. Position is contingent upon funding.
