The UNLV Libraries Special Collections Division engages students, faculty, the community, and researchers world-wide in the interdisciplinary study of gaming, Las Vegas, and Southern Nevada. The Division collects and makes available a variety of unique and rare materials on these topics, including manuscripts, archives, photographs, oral histories, books, maps, architectural drawings, media materials, government documents, and serials. The Division is home to the Center for Gaming Research, the Oral History Research Center, an award-winning Digital Collections program, and the only professionally equipped and staffed preservation laboratory in Nevada. The Digital Collections Department is part of the Special Collections Division and focuses on providing digital stewardship for the Libraries’ unique holdings.

The Digital Collections Department is a dynamic team of talented professionals committed to exploring and implementing innovative approaches that connect users to digital research collections. Examples of projects staff have spearheaded include the UNLV Linked Open Data Project, the highly regarded Nevada Test Site Oral History Project and Documenting the African American Experience in Las Vegas digital collections, and the collaborative development of the dmBridge templating system for CONTENTdm and D-Lib (an iOS app optimized for mobile viewing of the digital collections). The department has been part of a successful grant-writing team who has secured numerous externally funded grants. This faculty position, reporting to the Head, Digital Collections, is primarily responsible for managing digital library workflow as part of a fast-paced and highly collaborative team. The librarian is responsible for coordinating several functional areas of a growing digital library; including: management of a digitization lab and scanning operations, digital file management and digital preservation; metadata and linked open data creation, quality control for large scale production, and administration of specialized digital asset management software (currently CONTENTdm). The librarian will hire, mentor and supervise a team of student assistants and/or temporary employees and provide leadership in establishing and motivating the team to meet deadlines and digitization goals. The Digital Collections Librarian creates and delivers robust training for the team, coordinates vendor outsourcing projects, and maintains technical documentation. The primary purpose of this position is to ensure accuracy and efficiency within the complex digital library production environment by gathering information, delegating tasks, and making sound decisions to meet deadlines established by the Division/Department Head and external granting agencies. The librarian will provide a vision for production in the digital library, facilitate effective communication among staff, and build complete and accurate documentation of procedures, ultimately contributing to the strategic goals of providing users increased access to unique library materials via the digital collections. As a tenure track library faculty member, the incumbent will be expected to work collaboratively to build partnerships within the Libraries; engage in scholarly activities; and provide service to the university, the community, and the profession in accordance with Libraries and University standards for promotion and tenure.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required: A master's degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association; demonstrated recent digital library program experience; minimum one year experience managing complex technical projects; knowledge of and proficiency with digital library workflows including scanning specifications and metadata standards; ability to work independently, take initiative, and follow through effectively and efficiently with all issues and tasks; ability to work well with library faculty, staff, and student assistants; attention to detail and accuracy.

Preferred: Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated experience with CONTENTdm. Experience with ArchivesSpace, and/or other archival/digital asset management tools. Experience working with library vendors and open source software communities. Experience working on grant-funded projects. Coursework and experience in archives. Knowledge/or practical experience with digital preservation systems. Knowledge of best practices in the management of born-digital archival collections.

SALARY RANGE

This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position at Rank II or III (equivalent to an Assistant or Associate Professor). In addition, the UNLV Libraries is committed to and helps fund professional development opportunities. Salaries are competitive with those at similarly situated institutions and dependent upon labor market. Position is contingent upon funding.
