The University Libraries at Appalachian State University seeks a creative, forward-looking individual to be the Processing Archivist in Special Collections. The successful candidate will help the Special Collections team transform access, enhance discovery, and stimulate student learning using primary materials.
Special Collections is part of the University Libraries’ newly-organized maker group that is creating a makerspace and an experimental classroom, as well as initiating exciting digital scholarship projects. Special Collections includes four collecting areas: the W. L. Eury Appalachian Collection, Stock Car Racing Collection, University Archives, and Rare Books and Manuscripts. The W.L. Eury Appalachian Collection is the premier repository for materials focusing on the history and culture of the Appalachian region. Library personnel work in a collegial team-based environment, are members of the University faculty, participate in the Library’s instruction program, and engage in active programs of scholarship and professional service. The Library offers strong support for professional development activities, including publishing, presenting, and attending conferences and workshops.
Responsibilities
● Establish physical and intellectual control over collections by participating in and managing the accession, preservation assessment, arrangement and description, basic conservation, and preparation for long-term storage of collections based on archival policies and procedures including the development of EAD-compliant finding aids.
● Create accessioning and processing policy and procedures manuals.
● Working closely with team members, develop priorities, plans and procedures to manage processing workflow and work assignments.
● Lead the team in integrating arrangement and description with digitization to develop innovative finding aids linking digital content.
● In collaboration with Technology Services, monitor and employ applicable developments, trends, standards, and best practices to improve digital access to the collections through the web presence, mobile applications and online access to finding aids.
● Develop procedures for managing born-digital materials donated to the collections and work in liaison with the Digital Scholarship and Initiatives, Technology, and Bibliographic Services teams to improve access to digital materials.
● Manage content management databases (Eloquent Records and Archivists’ Toolkit) to ensure data quality and integrity and lead the team in the transition to the next system for collection accessioning, arranging and description.
● Oversee preservation assessment of collections, select materials for appropriate conservation treatment, and manage cleaning and basic conservation treatments in the conservation laboratory.
● Showcase and expand access to collections in new and innovative ways, including social media.
● Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate staff and student employees as appropriate.
● Participate in library and team planning.
● Participate in Special Collections team projects, as well as reference and instruction as needed.
● All library faculty are expected to participate in the library’s instruction plan and to engage in an active program of scholarship and professional service as outlined in the University’s Faculty Handbook and the Library’s Departmental Personnel Committee Guidelines.
Qualifications
Required
● ALA-accredited master's degree or master’s degree in information science program or in archival administration, public history, or related field. Coursework and/or training in archival theory and practice.
● Experience in accessioning, arrangement, and description of manuscripts and/or archives.
● Working knowledge of archival theory, practice, national standards, and best practices that govern the arrangement and description of archival materials, including EAD, DACS, EAC, and MPLP.
● Familiarity with content management systems such as Archivists’ Toolkit or ArchivesSpace.
● Experience creating and maintaining online archival finding aids, including EAD encoding and working knowledge of HTML/XML.
● Evidence of effective project planning, management, and completion.
● Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
● Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, donors, and patrons.
● Leadership skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
● Potential to meet the library’s requirement for scholarship, service, and leadership.
● Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
● Demonstrated project management and problem-solving skills.
Preferred
● Knowledge of Appalachian history and culture and/or U.S. history.
● Knowledge of current metadata standards.
● Strong technology skills or an ability and willingness to learn new technologies independently.
● Experience processing multi-format collections, including audiovisual and photographic materials.
● Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with diverse students, faculty, and staff.
● Supervisory experience.
● Life experiences similar to those of underrepresented populations at Appalachian.
This is a twelve-month, tenure track position and may be filled at the Assistant Professor, or Associate Professor rank.   Salary and rank are determined on the basis of qualifications and experience.
