Position Vacancy

Clinical Education Librarian, Hardin Library for the Health Sciences
Librarian/Specialist Librarian (PLB1-3A/PLB2-4A)

Position Description: The University of Iowa Libraries seeks an experienced, self-motivated, and forward-thinking professional for a Clinical Education Librarian position. Reporting to the Deputy Director of Hardin Library, the Clinical Education Librarian plans, promotes and provides information services that support the needs of faculty, researchers, staff and students of the five health colleges and affiliated hospitals.
Specific Duties and responsibilities include:
•     As liaison to academic and clinical units, cultivates relationships with faculty and residents to identify opportunities for library partnerships with education and health care programs.
•     Develops and conducts tailored library education sessions for all assigned liaison departments. Works with faculty to learn about needs of students with the goal of preparing sessions that are useful to students. Also works with faculty with goal of integrating library instruction into the curriculum.
•     In support of research and education, assists patrons with research and information management tools and skills through individual and small group consultations.
•     Partners with other librarians to develop and market library services to assigned liaison groups as well as the community.
•     Provides information and circulation services at the public service desk in-person and via telephone, email, and instant messenger.
•     Works with other Hardin Library staff members on projects for the health campus and health professional and consumers in the state of Iowa.
•     Serves on Hardin Library, University Libraries, health colleges, university and hospital committees and working groups
•     Contributes to and learns from the profession through avenues such as local, state, and national professional organizations and publications.

Required Qualifications
•     ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Science;
•     Knowledge of biomedical databases, such as PubMed;
•     Knowledge of Evidence-Based Practice concepts, including development of systematic reviews;
•     Experience with mobile devices, social networking, and other new forms of technology
•     Excellent oral and written communication skills;
•     Demonstrated commitment to diversity in the workplace or community;
•     Strong customer service and public services abilities;
•     Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team; and
•     For appointment at the Specialist (II) Librarian level: two years of professional experience to qualify at the Specialist Librarian level plus demonstrated interest in professional development that will enhance the candidate's value to the Libraries, the University, the profession, or the scholarly community.

Desired Qualifications
•     Experience providing instruction and reference services;
•     Experience teaching Evidence-Based Practice concepts including EBM resources and Critical Appraisal;
•     Experience providing advanced information services, including searching biomedical literature and full-text databases for general literature searches and for systematic reviews;
•     Experience using health sciences specific mobile apps;
•     Knowledge of course management systems;
•     Knowledge of scholarly communication and open access initiatives.

Salary and appointment: Start date is negotiable. Appointment will be made at the Librarian (I) or Specialist (II) Librarian level, depending on experience and qualifications of successful candidate. Salary ranges: Librarian $43,000 - $46,000; Specialist $47,000 - $60,000. The University of Iowa Libraries: The University of Iowa Libraries system consists of the Main Library, the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences and a number of branch libraries. The Libraries has more than 5 million volumes including thousands of electronic resources and coordinates the development and maintenance of the University’s locally-created open access digital resources including the Iowa Digital Library, featuring close to a million digitized texts, images, and audio and video recordings, as well as Iowa Research Online, our institutional repository. Our Special Collections include over 200,000 rare books, ranging in age from the 15th century to newly created artists’ books.

The University of Iowa is home to the Writers’ Workshop, the oldest graduate creative writing program in the country, and the blueprint for many of the creative writing programs that now thrive on campuses worldwide. The University has recently instituted a program in creative writing in Spanish. In 2008, UNESCO designated Iowa City as a world City of Literature.

Iowa City is a community of some 71,000 people (more than 150,000 live in the surrounding area) with excellent educational, recreational, and cultural advantages. It is consistently cited in the national media as a city with an excellent quality of life. The city is readily accessible via interstate highways and a major airport is only 30 minutes away. The community is growing in its diversity; within the Iowa City Community School District, 35.4% of the students are minority, with 19.8% identifying as Black, 8.4% as Hispanic, 6.7% as Asian/Pacific Islander, and .3% as Native American during the 2014/15 school year.
