POSITION:    Music Cataloging Librarian
AVAILABLE:   June 1, 2016

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks an experienced, flexible, and user-oriented individual for the position of Music Cataloging Librarian. This position directly supervises 1.0 FTE Music Cataloging Assistant and graduate assistants, and reports to the head of the Special Formats & Metadata Section of the Resource Description & Management Department (RDM).

RDM actively supports the teaching and research mission of the UNC-Chapel Hill University Libraries through metadata creation, analysis, and enrichment. The Music Cataloging Librarian manages the music cataloging unit within the Special Formats & Metadata Section, working closely with the Music Library and other technical services departments, providing original and complex copy cataloging of scores and sound recordings in multiple formats, managing other technical service processes for Music Library materials, participating in the NACO Music Project and BIBCO Music Funnel, and participating in special cataloging and catalog management projects as needed. This position’s supervisory responsibilities include hiring, training, and evaluating staff and possibly graduate students. The Music Cataloging Librarian will be expected to remain current with constantly evolving music cataloging rules, interpretations, and practices, and to participate in appropriate professional development, continuing education, and professional service.

REQUIRED Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
·      ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science or related advanced degree.
·      Undergraduate degree in music or related degree.
·      Music cataloging experience.
·      Supervisory, training, or project management experience.
·      Experience cataloging with RDA, AACR2, LC/PCCPS, Library of Congress Subject Headings, Library of Congress Classification, MARC 21, OCLC, and Music Library Association guidelines.
·      Experience with the principles of authority control, including the creation and use of authority records.
·      Bibliographic knowledge of one or more Western European languages.
·      Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse constituencies.
·      Excellent oral and written communication skills.
·      Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
·      Strong understanding of technical services and the special needs of music materials and their users.

PREFERRED Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
·    Advanced degree in music or related area.
·    Minimum two years of relevant professional experience.
·      Experience with the NACO and BIBCO components of the international Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC).
·      Familiarity with an integrated library system.
·      Ability to contribute to a culture of diversity in the Library and University.

Salary and Benefits
This is a twelve-month academic librarian appointment. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Standard state benefits of annual leave, sick leave, and State or optional retirement plan.
