LIBRARIAN
Monthly Salary Range $4,188-$5,348

THE POSITION

The Contra Costa County Library is recruiting Librarians for a variety of responsible and challenging library service assignments. Contra Costa County encourages interested candidates to consider this exceptional career opportunity with one of the Bay Area’s most progressive and respected libraries. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time vacancies may be filled from the results of this examination. Initial assignments may be as a Youth Services Librarian, Adult or Teen Services Librarian, Collection Development Librarian, or Juvenile Hall Librarian.

Under general supervision, Librarians provide professional library service including reference, reader’s advisory, programming and outreach, materials selection and/or technical services to meet the general information needs of the public.

New Librarians receive training in all aspects of the County Library’s operation, services and programs, as well as in-depth training in their specific assignment. Promotional opportunities are available to Library Specialist, Community Library Manager, and Senior Community Library Manager.

The County Library operates twenty-six (26) community libraries within a 750 square mile area and serves close to 1 million urban, suburban and rural patrons with an annual circulation reaching 7.4 million.

The employment list established from this examination may remain in effect for one (1) year.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
License Required: Candidates must possess and maintain throughout the duration of employment a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License. Out of state valid motor vehicle operator’s license will be accepted during the application process.
Education: Possession of a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science, from a school of librarianship accredited by the American Library Association.
Experience : 2 years’ experience in a customer oriented environment.
. SELECTION PROCESS

1.      Application Filing:   All applicants, including County employees, are to apply on-line at www.cccounty.us/hr , and submit the required information as indicated on the job announcement by the final filing date listed above. All applicants must clearly demonstrate that they meet the minimum qualifications provided on the job announcement. Resumes may not be substituted for the official County application. 2.       Written Examination: A writing proficiency examination will be administered to all accepted candidates who will be required to write essays on specific topics which will be evaluated on the basis of grammar, mechanics, word usage, sentence structure, organization, development and clarity. Candidates must receive a score of 70 which may be an adjusted score, in order to continue in the exam process. Successful candidates will be invited to the oral examination.   (Weighted 40%).
3.      Oral Interview:   An oral interview will be conducted by a Qualifications Appraisal Board in Martinez, Ca. The Board will evaluate candidates in job-related areas. Candidates must receive a rating of at least 70 from a majority of the Board members to be ranked on the employment list. (Weighted 60%).

As part of the application process, an applicant may be required to fill out a Conviction History form. Please note that the Conviction History Form should only be submitted when requested

The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.
