Transforming Knowledge/Transforming Libraries
Project Coordinator Librarian

The University of California, Irvine Libraries seeks a creative, energetic professional for the position of Project Coordinator Librarian in the Department of Special Collections & Archives. The position is embedded in the UCI Libraries’ Transforming Knowledge/Transforming Libraries Project which will integrate library and archival studies into the ethnic studies curriculum. The position will guide and mentor undergraduate students who are committed to documenting the experiences of ethnic and underrepresented communities of Orange County, California. The students will gain first-hand experience in building and providing access to the nation’s digital cultural heritage. This full-time, temporary position will be available July 1, 2017 and will end in June 2020.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Project Coordinator Librarian will oversee the Transforming Knowledge/Transforming Libraries research project, an IMLS-funded effort to study the impact of integrating library and information studies into the ethnic studies curriculum and provide undergraduates in these programs with first-hand experience in building and providing access to the nation’s digital cultural heritage. The position will report to the Head of Special Collections & Archives and University Archivist and will work in consultation with the Archivist for the Southeast Asian Archive and the Archivist for Orange County Regional History. In partnership with the UCI departments of Asian American Studies, Chicano/Latino Studies, and African American Studies, the Project Coordinator Librarian will introduce concepts of archives, cataloging/metadata, information literacy, and digital projects to undergraduate students in these programs. The Project Coordinator Librarian will recruit, train, and supervise a diverse group of students in paid summer assistant positions to contribute materials and metadata into a central digital collection hosted by the California Digital Library’s Calisphere portal. The Project Coordinator Librarian will work collaboratively to coordinate workflows and communication among various stakeholders across the campus and in the Orange County, California community, implement public programming, facilitate archival processing, and serve as project lead for the digital portal project, including conducting user design and experience research. The Project Coordinator Librarian may participate in campus events, instruction, exhibits, and other activities related to the project.
              
Qualifications

Required :
●       A graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution, or a graduate degree in archival studies, or equivalent combination of advanced degree and experience.

●       Coursework or training in historical, social science, and/or ethnic studies research methods.

●       Familiarity with the challenges involved in documenting the cultural heritage and experiences of ethnic and underrepresented communities.

●       Ability to learn about the history of Orange County, California.

●       Ability to plan, schedule, and prioritize multiple activities and meet project deadlines.

●       Ability to supervise and direct the work of student assistants.

●       Ability to learn new technologies quickly and effectively.

●       Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

●       Ability to interact effectively with colleagues in the Libraries, across the UCI campus, and in the Orange County, CA community.

●       Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively and to promote teamwork, diversity, equality, and inclusiveness within UCI Libraries and the campus.


Preferred:

●       Coursework or training in digital project management, user experience and design, and information systems.

●       Experience teaching, supervising, or mentoring students.

●       Ability to speak or read Vietnamese, Lao, Khmer, Hmong, Tagalog, Korean, or Spanish.

●       Experience with oral or video history projects.

●       Experience with digitization projects.


Orange County Regional History Collection

The UCI Libraries actively collects materials related to the history of the Orange County, California region. Special Collections & Archives seeks to document the history of Orange County from the mission period through the present: collection strengths include urban planning and development, the Irvine Ranch and the City of Irvine, environmental issues, city histories, political issues and leadership, LGBTQ history, visual and performing arts, as well as under-documented ethnic communities. The Special Collections & Archives collections include photographs, family papers, organizational records, maps, postcards, newspapers, government documents, books, serials, and ephemera.

The Orange County & Southeast Asian Archive (OC&SEAA) Center

The mission of the Orange County & Southeast Asian Archive (OC&SEAA) Center �C a unit of the Department of Special Collections & Archives in the University of California, Irvine Libraries �C is to provide instruction, training, and research resources for the UC Irvine community to document and preserve the diverse histories of the Orange County, California region. The OC&SEAA Center also collects oral history and materials that complement the collection strategies of the UC Irvine Libraries, enhancing the archives of Orange County history for our community and beyond.
The Department of Special Collections & Archives

Special Collections & Archives houses the UCI Libraries' collections of manuscripts and archives, rare books, and notable subject collections. Archival collecting areas of particular strength and distinction include regional history (emphasizing Orange County and Southern California), the Southeast Asian Archive, the Critical Theory Archive (including the papers of Jacques Derrida, Wolfgang Iser, Paul de Man, and others), the University Archives (documenting the UC Irvine campus), dance and the performing arts (including the papers of Robert Cohen and choreographers Donald McKayle and Eugene Loring), and distinguished UCI faculty (including Nobel Laureates Frederick Reines and Sherwood Rowland). The Special Collections & Archives Department consists of 6 librarians (including the Department Head), 3 library assistants, and a number of student assistants and interns.
The UCI Libraries

University of California, Irvine

Salary & Benefits : Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience based on the University of California pay scales. Appointment is anticipated to be at the Assistant Librarian rank with a salary of $48,438 - $59,943.
Librarians are entitled to two days per month of annual leave, thirteen paid holidays, and one day per month sick leave. The University has an excellent retirement system and offers a variety of group health, life, and disability insurance plans. Benefits are equal to approximately 40% of salary.
