Salary:
The salary is competitive and is negotiable depending on the strength of qualifications. This is a CSU Management Personnel Plan (MPP) position with an attractive benefits package which includes but is not limited to: a vacation accrual rate of 16 hours per month; 12+ paid holidays; excellent choice of medical, dental and vision insurance, long term disability coverage, life insurance; and retirement benefits.

Overview:
California State University, Fresno seeks an experienced, innovative and collaborative Dean of Library Services. The Dean of Library Services reports directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and serves as a member of the Deans’ Council. The Dean is responsible for all programs and unit activities within the Library. S/he leads planning, administration, fundraising, and personnel efforts to further sustain and improve Library operations and services.
The Dean of Library Services will successfully develop and execute a vision to further the mission and value of the Library in a time when technology and the needs of students are rapidly changing. By articulating a clear, dynamic, and creative vision, the Dean will chart the direction of the Library and its support of student success. S/he is charged with fostering an organizational climate based on respect, service, teamwork, communication, professional growth, and responsibility in which diversity, creativity, and innovation thrive while effectively managing and enhancing the Library’s fiscal resources. The Dean is also the spokesperson and advocate for the Library on campus, system-wide, regionally, and beyond.

Library Environment:
The Henry Madden Library at California State University, Fresno, is the largest academic library in California between Los Angeles and San Francisco. With over 1.5 million visitors a year, the 339,000 square foot library serves as the hub of the campus community. It provides innovative services including technology lending to both faculty and students, a growing digital repository, integrated information literacy instruction, and student-centered campus partnerships. The library has helped lead the CSU's transition to a system-wide unified library management system, ALMA, with full transition to be completed prior to the 2017-2018 fiscal year. The library has over a million print volumes, hundreds of thousands of electronic resources, and significant special collections of children's literature, teacher resources, music and media, World's Fair materials, local and regional history, and hosts numerous rotating exhibitions and campus and community events. The library also uses 3M's RFID system to safeguard its assets. Library personnel include 18 library faculty, 39 support staff, and 29 FTE student assistants. Position Summary:
Major Duties of the position include:
∙ Promoting library resources, technology, and services for the university and the constituency it serves;
∙ Overseeing a continuous program of long-range planning and development, and assessment of Library services;
∙ Balancing and integrating selected technologies with traditional collections and services, including the on-going development of collections and access to electronic information resources;
∙ Developing and cultivating sponsorship, grant and contract activity, as well as private funding for the Library;
∙ Managing all personnel actions within the Library; and
∙ Promoting a quality learning environment for our academic community and external constituencies.

Qualifications:
This position represents an outstanding opportunity for an experienced library leader with a history of decisive and innovative leadership, including managing human, financial, and physical resources. Applicants should have the leadership and interpersonal skills to engage staff, faculty, campus administration, and the community to build upon the Library’s solid foundation of supporting students, faculty and staff, and tackle new challenges, and a record of scholarship and service meriting appointment as a tenured Librarian. The ideal candidate will possess the following qualities and characteristics:

Knowledge of:
∙ Higher education issues and trends, curriculum and program development practices, the technology of teaching and learning, the general concerns and processes of educational equity and the needs and expectations of diverse student and faculty perspectives.
∙ Emerging trends in university libraries, including pedagogy of information literacy, scholarly communication, curriculum-driven collections and assessments.
∙ Innovation and sustainability of user/patron services.

Ability to:
∙ Work effectively in a multicultural, diverse, and complex university environment with staff, faculty, and administrators.
∙ Develop policies to support student success and promote academic excellence.
∙ Analyze complex problems, devise innovative solutions, and perceive the implications and potential consequences of various situations.
∙ Serve as the library’s key advocate and champion.
∙ Build relationships with donors, alumni, and other constituencies in the interest of fund raising.
∙ Work collaboratively with faculty and student governance utilizing consultative processes, consensus building, and development of community partnerships.

Experience:
∙ Minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible senior academic administrative experience and proven leadership ability.
∙ Experience in staff evaluation and supervision.
∙ Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of the university and community, especially a proven record of individual action and institutional leadership to advance diversity.
∙ Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, personnel, resource allocation, and budget/fiscal management.
∙ Experienced in recruitment, professional development and retention of talented and diverse library faculty and staff.

Education:
∙ MLS/MLIS degree from an American Library Association accredited program, or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:
∙ 5 years or more of progressively responsible senior academic experience which has provided the above knowledge, skills, and abilities.
∙ An additional advanced degree.
∙ Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and experience in a collective bargaining environment and/or knowledge of California State University policies and procedures.
∙ Demonstrated success in fostering university, state, regional and/or national cooperation in resource sharing, networking and collection development.
