The Health Sciences Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a person with curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking skills to provide expert search services in a variety of health subject areas and to serve as a liaison to the university’s School of Nursing. This position provides proactive, client-centered, education, research, and information services using a variety of methods and technologies.

The librarian performs work in client settings and in the library. The Health Sciences Librarian is part of a team of librarians, support staff, and library partners working to achieve the library's mission to manage information and knowledge to advance health and health care.

Primary Responsibilities

The successful candidate will provide in-depth instruction and expert searches--including systematic and integrative reviews--for clients from health disciplines such as allied health, dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and public health. The Health Sciences Librarian will participate with other librarians and staff in providing information services through consultations and learning management systems, and will assist users to effectively select and use information tools and resources. The successful candidate will help clients manage research results and information assets for effective use. This position also works with colleagues to advise clients on information and data management, scholarly communications, and the identification of grant funding.

As Liaison to the UNC School of Nursing (SoN) , the successful candidate will collaborate with faculty and curriculum committees to integrate critical thinking, critical appraisal of the literature, and information and digital literacy at key junctures in students’ education, on and off campus. The Health Sciences Librarian will participate on research teams to maximize quality and productivity, assist faculty in disseminating research and instruction to serve the school’s and university’s missions, and assess and fill needs for products, digital tools, guides, and content for research or educational purposes. The successful candidate will establish relationships with key stakeholders in the SoN and other schools and foster opportunities for collaboration with groups, departments, and schools around identified or anticipated instructional, outreach, and research needs.

The Health Sciences Librarian is expected to pursue professional development, professional service activities, and publication as guided by the standards of the library’s Committee on Appointments and Promotions. The successful candidate will participate in self-directed learning and education programs to build subject knowledge and stay current with emerging trends, conduct research or quality improvement projects on the nature and impact of high quality information services, and collect anecdotal and statistical data to help communicate client needs and demonstrate value.

The Health Sciences Librarian will support cross-functional communication and accomplishment of library goals by participating in department and library-wide meetings, educational offerings, and library groups as assigned.

This position reports to the Assistant Department Head, User Services, Health Sciences Library, and partners with the clinical nursing librarian.

Qualifications

Required
·        ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science, or related advanced degree, and minimum of two years’ relevant post-degree work experience.
·        Experience conducting expert-level literature searching in health subject areas.
·        Demonstrated experience designing and teaching adult learners using scalable, interactive methods, both one-on-one and in groups, online and face-to-face.
·        Demonstrated knowledge of the nursing literature and scholarly communication practices in the discipline.
·        Evidence of project, priority, and time management skills and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
·        Must be flexible and able to learn quickly in a fast-paced environment with rapid changes.

Preferred
·        Education or work experience in a health discipline, or in instructional design or instructional technologies.
·        Three or more years’ experience working in an academic, hospital, or health sciences library.
·        Familiarity with educational competency requirements in health professions and assessment of competencies.
·        Familiarity or experience with interprofessional education and practice.
·        Demonstrated participation in teams to conduct systematic reviews, practice guidelines, evidence synthesis, or consensus statements.
·        Proficiency with at least one reference management tool and familiarity with systematic review software.

Salary and Benefits
This is a twelve-month academic librarian appointment; salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
