Job Description:
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Libraries seeks a creative, enthusiastic, and service-oriented entry level or early career professional for the position of Instruction Librarian and Liaison to departments within the humanities. This is a non-tenure instructor or assistant professor position. Reporting to the Information Literacy Coordinator, the person in this position will contribute to the expansion of a student-centered information literacy program for first-year writing students by designing, creating, coordinating, teaching, and assessing instruction for freshman composition courses. The position will also provide liaison, outreach, and support to other departments.
UAB Libraries supports the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s teaching mission by providing information literacy instruction to a diverse community of learners through programmatically integrated, scaffolded, and engaging learning experiences to promote research skills and multiple literacies. This position will be based in the Mervyn H. Sterne Library at UAB. Sterne Library supports research in the arts and humanities, business, education, engineering, natural sciences and mathematics, and social and behavioral sciences.

Required duties include:
- Working closely with the Director of Freshman Composition and Developmental Studies and the Director of the University Writing Center to develop curricula and activities to create library instructional outcomes based on the freshman composition curriculum.
- Partnering with instructors in the English Department, including adjunct writing instructors and TAs, to plan curriculum and schedule library instruction for first-year composition classes.
- Developing and co-developing reusable and one-time learning objects.
- Participating in peer-to-peer evaluations of teaching and/or teaching tools.
- Providing reference and research assistance to library patrons through multiple modes of delivery, including scheduled shifts at the service desk.
- Liaison duties within departments in the humanities, including collection development.
- Instruction, workshops, and research assistance for all first-year writing classes and students.
- Instruction, workshops, and research assistance within departments in the humanities.
- Active participation in the campus community, including serving on library and university committees.
- Involvement in local, state, regional, national, or international professional or scholarly associations.
- Performing other duties and special projects as assigned, depending upon additional expertise, interests, and the needs of the libraries.

Required Qualifications     
- A Master’s degree, either awarded or completed by the start date, in library/information science from an ALA-accredited school.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, including the ability to work independently as well as within a team environment and with diverse groups.
- Strong commitment to cultural competency, diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education.
- Potential to achieve the requirements for promotion in the areas of librarianship, research, and service.

Preferred Qualifications     
- Master’s or other advanced degree.
- 1-2 years of relevant library experience; experience may include coursework or library school experience.
- Knowledge of information and visual literacy framework and standards.
- Experience with instruction.
- Knowledge of current issues and trends in instructional pedagogy, technologies, and literacies.
- Familiarity with applying emerging technologies for information and instructional services, including LibGuides or video- or screen-capturing software
- Willingness to take risks and experiment with new methods.
