Clemson University Libraries seeks an innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented University Archivist. The archivist will provide leadership and expertise in archives and records administration, access to university records and archives in all formats, and instructional activities and research support. The University Archives serves as the official “institutional memory” of the university, providing long-term preservation and access to the collection documenting its development and history. The University Archives is part of the Special Collections and Archives Unit that is distinguished for its strong collections in agriculture, textile history, and South Carolina politics.

Library faculty are members of the academic community, with responsibilities in the areas of librarianship, scholarship, and service. This is a 12-month tenure-track position accountable to the Head of Special Collections and Archives.

Responsibilities include:

University Archivist
•     Identifies historical administrative and academic content to enhance the collections of the University Archives
•     Participates in university records management by working with units and departments on scheduling and preservation of their records
•     Takes a strategic and creative approach to collecting contemporary content, building on a strong foundation that includes records reflecting diverse perspectives of campus life
•     Prioritizes and manages the processing and description of University collections and resources in all formats
•     Employs tools and techniques, such as oral history interviews, to fill gaps in the official institutional record
•     Fosters interest about Clemson University’s history through the development of digital resources, programming, and presentations
•     Promotes the interpretation and understanding of the university’s history through reference, research, publication, and instruction
•     Engages in professional development such as attending conferences, workshops, and webinars related to job functions

Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities
•     Develops a focused program of high quality research and creative accomplishments, consistent with professional responsibilities and the Libraries’ mission and goals

Service
•     Actively participates and demonstrates leadership in professional responsibilities that serve the Libraries, University, profession, and community

Required Qualifications/Experience:
•     ALA-accredited graduate degree in librarianship, SAA-accredited graduate degree in archives administration, or a relevant, accredited graduate degree in another scholarly field (e.g., history) as deemed appropriate by the Libraries
•     Two years’ experience in some aspect of archives, special collections, or records repository
•     Demonstrated experience processing archival collections and creating finding aids
•     Demonstrated experience using archival collection management software
•     Demonstrated experience working with archival collections, research, and outreach in a digital environment
•     Knowledge of current trends and developments in archives and records management
•     Demonstrated ability to work with researchers, donors, alumni, and other constituencies
•     Demonstrated excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills
•     Demonstrated initiative, self-direction, and a commitment to innovation, creativity, and excellence
•     Ability to work effectively in a diverse team environment and individually, to balance priorities, and to set and meet deadlines
•     Ability to lift 40 lbs. and meet other physical demands of the position

Preferred Qualifications/Experience:
•     Experience in an academic or research library
•     Demonstrated experience with ArchivesSpace
•     Knowledge of current trends in administrating college and university archives
•     Membership in the Institute of Certified Records Managers
•     Training or supervisory experience.

Salary and Benefits:
Faculty rank and competitive salary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. Various medical plans, dental plans, and retirement plans available. 18 days annual leave, 15 days sick leave, 13 paid holidays, and liberal professional development leave are provided. Library faculty receive an individual stipend for travel or other professional development activity.

The Libraries:
The libraries on Clemson’s main campus are the R.M. Cooper Library, the Gunnin Architecture Library, the Education Media Center, and Special Collections and Archives. Other facilities include the Clemson Design Center Library in Charleston and the Library Depot in Anderson, which houses high-density storage, records management, the digitization lab, and technical services. The libraries employ 28 faculty, 62 staff, and over 70 students. Clemson Libraries is a member of the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL), Lyrasis, and the ACRL Diversity Alliance, and actively participates with other South Carolina institutions through the statewide consortium, PASCAL.
